Found some old posts on Fuel Clerks and wondering what the pay starts out at and if it has gone up since then? Shouldnt that job be higher paying than any other with all the requirements and duties you have throughout the shift?
This is what I see on requirements and duties. I do not know anything about the job itself so just checking?
The Fuel Station Clerk is responsible for the following ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Customer Service They must greet the customers, respond to their questions and assist them in a courteous and helpful manner. This is most often performed from a closed kiosk work area via intercom, however, the fuel station clerk may go outside near the pump stations to assist customers. The employee may have infrequent telephone conversations, most often with the supervisor inside the store.
Stocking Fuel station clerks must receive and restock merchandise shelves within the kiosk as well as items located on displays outside the kiosk. These items may be as heavy as 50#.
Operate Cash Registers and Computers / Transact Sales Fuel station clerks must stand and operate computerized cash registers for up to 2 hours prior to a break or meal. They must be able to process fuel, merchandise, and lottery orders through the register quickly and accurately. They must be able to operate all equipment that pertains to customer check out including, but not limited to, the credit/debit card scanner, the lottery terminal and check reader.
Balancing and Cash Management Fuel station clerks are responsible for accurately balancing sales and cash in the point of sale computer system and for completing a daily, 3-page sales and cash balancing report.
Stocking All fuel station employees are required to lift and stock various items located on displays both inside and outside the kiosk. These items may weight as much as 50#.
Cleaning Fuel station clerks are required to clean and maintain the kiosk floor, windows, work surfaces, and equipment as well as fuel dispensers, vending machines, trash receptacles, customer surfaces, and parking areas outside the kiosk.
Equipment Fuel station clerks must have a working knowledge of all fuel station equipment including, but not limited to, computer modems, tank monitoring devices, automated signs, and fuel dispensers.
Competition Checks To remain competitive, all fuel service employees must be aware of retail fuel prices at the other area stations. Competition checks must be done throughout each day.
Crisis Management Fuel station clerks must be able to respond quickly and appropriately to physical and chemical emergencies.
Physical Work Demands - Fuel station clerks work alone and must stand, twist, bend, and turn in confined spaces for up to 4 hours at a time. They must perform repeated reaching, often with both hands, less than 20" in most cases. Fuel station clerks may be exposed to extreme temperatures outside the kiosk.
Job Requirements
REQUIREMENTS: The Fuel Station Clerk must be friendly, courteous, and self-sufficient, able to deal directly and effectively with customers through the work shift. This employee must be able to assist fuel customers in the safe use of pump stations, helping to maintain the actual day-to-day business of the fuel station. Fuel station clerks complete fuel, tobacco, and other merchandise transactions, ring purchases on the Radiant System register, and perform housekeeping of the fuel kiosk and the outside fuel station space. A full-time work shift is defined as an eight-hour workday with standard breaks and meal. Employees in this position may work either full-time or part-time schedules as approved and scheduled by the fuel station supervisor or store manager.
Wow all I got to say on this ...... 2 hours prior to a break I would love to get a break after 2 hours ! As for being friendly I am pretty sure that is everybody job just not fuel clerks.... As for MAY BE EXPOSED EXTREME WEATHER...Try being a bagger where we DO get exposed to rain, ice , sleet , 100 degree temps... snow try pushing 5,6,7 carts though 6 inches of snow like Illinois baggers are doing today!!! Face it fuel clerk is one of the easiest jobs in the store!!!!!
Fuel Clerk here, started about 11 months ago at 7.85, you'll be getting 25 cent raises or so every 6-7 months least what I was told and so far its been right. As far as what the job consists of lets just say it is pretty easy but also tiring also. While its true about 30% of the job is sitting waiting for a customer, you basically are on your own. I have had times where managers didn't answer page's, phone line been down in Fuel Center for 2-3 days, people call in and have had to work 48+ hrs because there are so little of us out there. Overall I'd take it over the front end by far and that's how all the employees who moved out here from the front end feel as well. As long as you don't get bored easy and know how to handle rude customers and don't get overwhelmed with complaints and learn to handle stuff without anyone help you should be fine.
Thx for the info. Still trying to land a job there and trying to go with the best money to be made starting out. Seems night stocking is it? I dont mind the night shifts. But I also like that in the fuel center, you are separated from the main store "on your own" basically as you say. Cant stand someone watching over me like I have seen with the cameras and 2 way mirrors at the top.
No matter what some of these guy saying about fuel its a easy gig it's not we deal with people that are stupid as crap from smoking at the pumps which we can be blown all to hell for customers like that and the pay is crap we should be getting in store cashier pay or more because we deal with hazardous materials. Plus we do Customer Service job with refunds when needed. We do Grocery and GM's job because there departments are to lazy to come out and stock there own stock at fuel center. Like Ice.Kroger water Tobacco, Advil Oil Case which is GM's job not fuel job to stock it because we don't get your guys pay which is unfair.I like the contract we had once before, if it was not our department and another department employee touches it to but it on the shelf they got that departments pay rate. Thats what fuel needs if we touch any of Grocery of GM's Crap and put it on the shelf we get there pay.

Baggers job is not easy, by any stretch of the imagination, however, I will argue this. During the winter months, it is a PITA to push carts, but on a daily basis, not having a bathroom to go whenever you want, having to change your restroom schedule in order to not mess your pants while your at work? Dealing with customers who complain about gas prices, and directly blame you for every problem they have with the pumps because they don't know the fuel point system or how to operate the pumps with a credit card. Or the old people who refuse to pre-pay who complain thinking I can magically change our policy on it. I'd rather sit up front and bag, and go outside for what maybe an hour in the snow to grab carts where i can listen to music, and not deal with people at all? That goes without saying.
Fuel can have some of the most downtime, which yah, is nice and easy. But lets see some of you guys come out to the fuel station, the last day of the month, or right before gas prices are going up. Or even running the fuel center when loyalty goes down, explaining to every customer I cant give them their discount and have them take it out on me, because thats what people do these days, because they know I wont tell them to go **** themselves because I need this job.
Each job has its challenging points, physically fuel requires the least PHYSICALLY, but requires you to be onpoint mentally with change, entering information, and applying peoples discounts.
