Family members working together
Permalink

So.... I don't know if this is true or not yet but i've heard that a family member of a certain favorite co-worker I mentioned before, might start working in our department soon. Apparently right now she's in the hiring process? Or at least considering applying, but it's already been hinted that she *might* have a job. Because the HR person said it would be allowed "because there's a boyfriend and girlfriend in the produce department". Which is news to me but I don't follow the gossip apparently. But even if that's true, there's a big difference to me between having bf/gf there and having blood relatives there.

My question is, if they would hire her and have a relation working together in our department is there anything illegal about this? Is this a case for ethicspoint or not? I get that neither one would be in an authority position but the one co-worker's already the manager's favorite, having a relative in there would just mean they'd all stick up for each other even more.

Right now this is all speculation and I'm not even suppose to mention it - we aren't supposed to know yet I guess. If it's even true.

Also, is there any way to find out your store's union rep without asking around? I don't even know who our union steward is anymore. I know who it used to be but she moved out of state.

It depends on how you or everyone else wants to "enforce" rules so strongly.

There's plenty of people here in my store that works with their relatives. One of them is an aunt/nephew relation and another one is father/son. The pairs are all in their same respective departments.

The manager knows this well and even tries to schedule their shifts as closely as possible so they could carpool and stuff.

But, the hiring people aren't as accomodating, especially the ones in job fairs. The moment you say or make them believe you have a relative in a store you're applying to, they'll automatically try to get you in a different store.

As long as one isn't in charge of the other then it's completely okay. If one is a dept. head for produce while the other is a cashier, then there isn't a problem. What is with you people that don't understand this? .-.

I think the problem 4hourrush is having isn't with the policy, it's with the players.

No, it is not. Here in our area/district, no relatives may work in the same store, period.

Well to be honest it really depends upon the individual. If say my brother was to work in my department I wouldn't treat him any differently. In fact I would probably be more uptight since I know how he does ****.

I'm not talking about two different departments. I know that's allowed.

I'm talking about a mother/daughter working together in a department that only has 6 people total.

And I found out more today, from another coworker, she wasn't happy to hear this either. But is there anything we can do about it? I found out who our union steward is today, but I don't really want to go to her whining about this. But I still think this is showing favoritism so much....

Do not go to your steward over this. That would just cause more problems. Phone your representative and ask what their feelings are on the matter.

Well, then I believe your area is the exception, not the rule. Generally speaking there is an issue only when one will be in a position of authority over the other.

At the store I came from, the CSM was cousins with the produce mgr, the drug/gm mgr was the grocery mgr's daughter and was married to the fuel lead.

At my current store, one of my cashiers is the daughter of the scan coordinator, the dsd receiver is the mother of a grocery worker, and we had 2 sisters who were cashiers, and 2 twin sisters as well. There are probably more related people working there that I don't know about because of my store's size.

It's called nepotism, and one has to be the subordinate of the other
