calling in sick?

I haven't been feeling well and I can't work my scheduled shift. Who do you talk to when you call in? I'm a cashier, so would I talk to one of the front end managers or the regular store manager or is it someone else? Can they deny you calling in and make you come in anyway? Sorry these are such dumb questions, its just I've never had to call in before so I have no idea how this works. I have another question similar to that also, I'm planning on quitting and putting in my 2 weeks notice soon because I got an offer for a better paying job, who do you contact when you want to quit and whats the best way to go about it?

calling in - just call and say youre sick and not coming in

quitting - put it in writing, give to a manager

As SCO said, just call in.

The night crew manager will answer the phone right now and leave a message for the service desk.  Let them know when you were scheduled to work, your department and that you are sick.  You do not need to explain anything else.

Our contract says we have to call in an hour before our shift.

If you are the opening cashier, then that might be an issue.  The CSM will need to find a replacement pretty dam quick.

This is what I recommend to people who have a solid lead on a new, better job:

First, be sure it's for real. If you can take even a week's leave of absence, do it. File it under family leave. Barring that, medical; pay some bucks to your family doctor to verify it. No problems there. Go straight to the new job, spend as much time as you have available there to see if it's going to work. One week should tell you.

Second: I used to tell people 'Don't burn any bridges, do the right thing, put in a two week notice. You never know if you'll need to come back." But now I tell people what I just wrote above, and now here and below: FK that. If they're gonna fire you, you get a TWO SECOND notice. And as for coming back? To what? Part time hours at minimum wage with no benefits?

That's why, in summary, I say: If you have a solid job lead, don't gamble on it until the odds are drastically in YOUR favor. After that? Go for it.

Excellent advice.  I agree 100% completely especially, the now part.

I feel like I should elaborate when people say just call in for when you are sick.  You need to talk to a manager of the store or assistant manager, not a floor supervisor, to have a "proper call-off".  This will allow you to use an unexcused absence day without running the risk of getting written up or having an improper call-off (you can get it a lot of trouble for those at my store because it does not get correctly communicated to all of your department that you are not coming in).

Thank you so much for that advice! That really helps!

Thats a good point and thats why I'm planning on leaving because I'm just making minimum wage at Kroger and they cut my hours. This other job is working out so far, I started training and thats going well. I'll definitely wait it out a week to make sure it works and then put in the two weeks notice.

Ah, thank you! I assumed manager of the store but I wanted to make sure.

Make sure you talk to a manager on duty. They will fire you for a no call no show. I know from personal experience
