Ok, I know everyone has work to do, but seriously?? If a checker or dept worker says they are busy with a certain task they are working on, it seems to be ok. No one bitches at them. Now if a bagger/utility clerk says the same thing, they are TRYING to do their work, they get bitched at. It's like if you say you are busy trying to do something necessary, you get bitched at, because heaven knows a dept head or checker can NOT and will NOT do a "low mans" task. I get bitched at if I say I am doing something important. A dept worker does the same thing and it's ok. Is it because I am a lowly bagger?

Basically, yes.

Service departments have to keep their counters manned.

Cashiers have to be on their registers, otherwise you'd have people just strolling out of the store without paying, or at least be tempted to do so.

Grocery clerks can say they're "busy" since as far as I know, they report not to some pricks at the front end, but to the grocery manager and the store manager, who I'm sure would rather have the stockers get the product to a shelf to avoid holes and damage their scores than clean up some dog poo in the baby aisle.

Also, no offense, but baggers are expendable. If you don't do the work, they'll just find someone who will.

You sure? I sure felt expendable when the HR manager hired me as a Grocery Clerk in the dairy department. I don't think courtesy clerks are any more expendable than bottom of the totem pole grocery clerks, or am I wrong?

They're not. At my store we usenet baggers to get the stuff done we don't want to do or have no time for. Line cleaning and getting go backs from our dept. While some "higher ups" treat our baggers like crap and then 'threaten' with write ups if the bagger has the audacity to stand up for themselves, I treat everyone with respect. If I can clean my own deptnir clear out the go backs I will. I also thank and recognize the courtesy with respect.

We ALL have jobs to do and it's STUPID to get "butthurt" if someone says they are busy at the moment and can't drop what they are doing.
