Courtesy clerks should get hazard pay for being out there, wtf.

I for one believe Kroger should provide free hot chocolate for any employee who is forced to go outside.

Back when I was a bagger many moons ago, we only had to stay outside 15 minutes at a time when the temperature dropped into the single digits.  When your time was up, you came inside and got the next person on the list.

If the force you to stay out wear a good, warm, jacket of
YOUR choosing. Your health is MORE IMPORTANT than getting carts.

There was a note by the duties list for the baggers that they can only be out there a max of 10 minutes then they must come in and rotate out. Our entire parking lot is a sheet of ice, it's finally a balmy 15 degrees right now. Crazy thing is, it feels pretty darn tolerable! But that is ridiculous. You could get frostbite. That's a hill worth dying on with your CSM.

As a FES, I gave my baggers specific instructions to be outside no longer than 10-15 minutes, and free hot chocolate or coffee was provided. We had a district memo come down stating those very things. Anything else would be unacceptable.

I guess the only real solution here is to start lowering the pay of baggers even more. That will encourage them to move up in position so they don't have to go out in the cold. I should send this idea to corporate right away. I'm sure they could figure out someway to bypass minimum wage.

 Wait, Kroger pays their employees?

I think they do indeed give chump change. The real money comes from the government though. I mean, why pay workers a decent wage when the government can do it for you?

Check your contract. It may have a provision that requires Kroger to supply protective equipment. They provide gloves, reflective vests, and hand sanitizer in our store. I would think that cold weather gear should be provided.

My store gave out free pizza and hot chocolate to every employee that came in that first day (Monday) and then free hot chocolate for the courtesy clerks every day that was below 10 after that. They also provisioned no longer than 5 minutes at a time they're allowed to be out.

Cold weather gear is definitely available through the uniform program. My store has ordered a thickly insulated, long-sleeved coverall-type thing which zips up. We have only gotten 1 and it's a medium, so it's sadly too small for many of my baggers to wear, but they are available and kids who have used it said it was very effective worn over their clothes.

I have an excellent winter coat. My old manager(before he got canned) said it wasn't "company issued" so therefore NOT allowed in HIS store. We had one coat but it was MIA have the time. I told management I was NOT going to risk getting sick for ANY reason and a write up was OUT OF THE QUESTION. I wore my coat. Screw policies. I doubt 100% that ANY customer will care if you are wearing a "company approved jacket" they just want out of the cold.

I was a bagger for about two years because I was a minor that long. My Kroger didn't care if you were out there for an hour. You learned to suck it up and wear layers. My advice for every bagger was "It's cold. Nobody cares what you look like. I'm not kidding when I say 'wear a ski mask'".
