Meat dept. contract question
Permalink

I was tying a bale the other day when our store manager came in and said "You work in the meat/seafood department right?" I said yes and he went on to say "So what do you think you're doing tying bales?" I said uh it was full so I though I had to... Basically he said next time I was caught tying a bale I would be written up because meat worker's contract states that we aren't allowed to tie bales because we handle fresh meat and poultry and it's a contamination issue. I guess my question is was he justified in threatening to write me up? I thought I'd better empty the baler instead of just leaving it for someone else to do. Apparently it's against the rules for my department to empty it or tie bales because our contract is separate...

In my store meat/seafood does it just like everyone else.

We have a schedule for each day, on which depts. have to do bales.

Deli/bakery/produce handles food too, so that logic makes absolutely no sense to me.

Contamination issue? What about the baggers who handle the produce and meat and get their hands dirty when they do trash? And they're less likely to even wash their hands anyways. Tying a bale can be pretty dirty, but not nearly as bad as trash. Besides nobody even likes tying them, so why should the manager care that you want to take care of it?

If your store manager doesn't want you tying bales then don't do it again it's not that big of a deal, believe me you're one of the few in the meat/seafood who would tie one on their own.

Ask him to show you where it states that. Also where he threatened your job ask for a union steward to be present at this. You want to see it in writing and not just hear-say.

In our meat contracts it specifically states what we do in the meat department and what our work involves. It doesn't say that we have to make bales, but as a courtesy we do it. I made a deal with one of the grocery crew that if he makes a bale i'll help him and it takes the time from 15 minutes to 5 minutes to make a bale. If your store manager is going to throw a fit over there i'm sure you have Winning in Each Store which has a focus department during huddles. If it say produce, you should just go back to the meat department and do your job. If they ask why you didn't date check fruit or stock fruit just tell them its not in our contract for meat.

Oh yeah, we have that and produce is our focus dept. we have to do "Freshness checks", which to me is something produce should be doing instead of us having to do their jobs. But whatever. Meat dept. has to go to them like everyone else, so i'm not sure why all of a sudden meat is being treated differently in some stores.

It could be due to the cost of labor. They probably figure we could be cutting than picking berries. Most experienced meat cutters make $13.70 / hr and market managers make around $18 / hr.
