Changing Job Classification
Permalink

I've worked in grocery for some time as day stocker until someone from night crew decided to take my (only available) shifts as full time (contrary to my part-time status). As a result, they've moved me to the Front End "until more grocery hours are provided".

Now, I only agreed because what they claimed is that I'm only at the front end temporarily manning the registers. Right now, I'm still classified as a Grocery Clerk, making 7.45/hour.

If the time comes, are they allowed to change my classification to a front end clerk/cashier without my approval? And if they do, will it bring my pay down to 7.25 (the starting point for front end) with no raises (since I'm part time barely making the minimum hours)?

I'm in school when I'm not at work or at home. My current hours just barely allow me to pay off my tuition bit by bit. It'll be a shame if I'm forced to take further cuts.

What state are you in?  Do not give too much identifying info.

It depends on your contract.  You should speak to your union steward  The person to ask about your future would be your store manager that moved you sideways.  I think in our contract, they cannot take a higer pay if we get moved to a lower paying position.  That might only apply to full time employees tho!

That is odd to open a fulltime shift for a day grocery clerk.  All stocking is being sent to nights at our store.  Only a part time clerk gets day hours.  He was getting scheduled 4 hours a week there for a while.

You are not alone on hours being cut.  We had 2 workers resign and the eschedule still cut our hours for getting the work done.

I'm in Texas.

Supposedly, the night guy moved to day stock because of some alleged "drama" in between the crew. And I thought that was only a front end thing. no

Anyway, we've had at least one more night person "move" to another store, yet hours have been cut further. They've got the other grocery clerk assembling furniture all week now instead of helping stock dairy or grocery.

Yup, there is drama at our store too.  I just ignore it and try not to add to it.  :)

I am in Michigan so your contract is different.
