Can I get fired for eating a bakery sugar cookie that is set aside for customers and such. I think that a manager saw me do it and am scared now.I am a full time worker, and it seems all the managers in my store caught the "firing bug." I am paranoid about being fired for anything and everything now it seems. Employees and managers alike used to eat those sugar cookies from the bakery because they are set aside for tasting anyways. But with the new set of robo-managers who always ask for a receipt and whether or not I clocked out for break might not be so forgiving. I asked the bakery worker if it was ok prior to taking one.
If you don't get fired over this, consider it a valuable lesson learned. Those samples are for customers, no matter what justifications you might be filling your head with. There's not a snack on this planet that's worth your job.
I fully understand. I have a daughter to support. I have low blood sugar. I actually was hospitalized at work once because of it. I didn't have any money to get a snack. Plus I was on the clock and felt wrong buying something on Kroger's time.

If its just one cookie I see no problem with this. We had a guy whos been coming in and asking for a sample of a french fry, a wing, etc. They have three varieties of cookies to sample and he takes 6 of those. He also ate 6 sample cups of soup and at least 1 lb of kickin' crab salad. Management is well aware of this individual, yet they've done nothing with him. If they fire you for 1 cookie i'd raise hell over it.

Well. I would think so. But there is word that three employees were fired yesterday for sharing a cookie that wasn't paid for off the shelf. Is there a difference between these two as far as the union is concerned?
I look at it as this: You're there to provide the best shopping experience to the customer. Tell the manager (if they start ****) that, I needed to know how they tasted. As that would be helpful in guiding a customer to tasty treat, instead of lying and saying, oh yea they're all good. You could say, I know they are all good, tasty cookies, but I know for a fact that these are just heavenly.
I've talked with customers and shared what I thought was a good, and tasty product. Just the other day, I told one about the Bread and Butter Chunk Kroger brand pickles. That they (and I am honest) taste as close to any to what my grandma made. And they do. Guy bought 3 jars on the spot. Now we didn't have a tasting for the pickles but you get my point. It's good to try various products, and be able to give honest reccomendations to customers. I'll be honest, I've tasted one Kroger brand product, and have told them, you may like this one, but I didn't at all. Was something that we only carry in Kroger brand.
Anyway, I wouldn't worry. You weren't stealing, you tasted a sample. I'm sure they could see you on camera. And if it was just that 1 time (if they wanted to press the issue), then I can't see them making a fuss. They've got a lot more important stuff to deal with.
It's a bit silly to think that you would get fired for that. I work in the deli, right next to the bakery, and when we get hungry we go and get cookies from the bakery sample box all the time. Sometimes we even eat 2 or 3. For the most part, customers don't eat them and they get thrown out at the end of the day (usually with the bakery person asking us if we want any). We also have pizza samples and Starbucks samples.
If you even think it might be wrong, or even maybe could get you in trouble, don't do it. I've read a hundred excuses for taking needless chances on this stupid $hit here. WTF does it cost you, really, just to NOT do something you know could get you jammed up?? 'Oh, I'll go to the union!' OVER COOKIES?
Yes, you can be fired. If it wasn't paid for and you were on the clock, they are both stealing. I imagine the manager would have terminated you instantly.
Will the person that gave you permission vouch for you and lose their job for giving away merchandise?
Don't talk about it anymore and don't do it again.
Only make purchases and consume merchandise when you are on break or lunch. Have reciept available.
We had an employee fired for eating the produce samples.
I like the person above who twisted the situation into their favor. instead of allowing yourself to fall a victim of eating samples, try to find a positive reason for it and explain away. regardless- you shouldn't eat samples. but I bet the manager who saw you is equally guilty. if you are a 'valuable' employee, don't fret too much and if questioned, say that you will not eat again and apologize. I once was told to report to another stores deli b/c most all their staff was suspended for eating. but they did it all the time... popcorn chicken, salami, cheese, etc. that's a little more abusive. good luck

If you made it this far you should be ok. I take a cookie every now and then. Just don't take it and have a mouth full of cookie when customers are around. And always look both ways before taking one.

If they ever tried to pull that stunt on me in my store I would end it through arbitration.

Heard both sides of this from dont touch samples too its only one. I think it would matter who the managers are. Since they have their own plate of things to take care of the question is "are" they going to enforce a rule or not?
