Calling Off
Permalink

So last night I came down with a bug, took some Advil and decided to sleep it off.  This morning I woke up with a terrible sore throat and felt congested, etc.  I called in two and a half hours before my shift and spoke to a store manager who was upset that I was calling in.  He's not even associated with my department, didn't remember me after the numerous hellos and conversations had in the smoker's hut, but was the only manager available at that time in the morning.  I even asked if there were enough people so I wouldn't be screwing anyone over (I'm in the Bistro) and told him I'd call back within the hour to see if I'd be up to coming in.

After I woke up and had some tea and medicine, I felt well enough to go in.  Only after remembering that my car had died the night before and wouldn't start.  :P  I called an informed him as to my current state of affairs and he was super pissed that I couldn't go in.  I told him I was well enough but my car wouldn't start.  Is it my fault that my car broke down on me?!?!

I have been at Kroger for 3 months and today was my second day calling in.  The first was to take care of my mom after she had heart surgery (they were even mad about that one).  He said we'd need to "have a discussion when I came in because they need reliable people."  WTF?!  Reliable people?  Showing up isn't the only thing that goes into reliability.  There are people who've been there for 2 or 3 years and don't do anything because they're protected by the union.  I'm a hard worker and get my stuff done.  I don't ask questions and shovel poo when others won't.  Is he really justified in being upset enough to (most likely) write me up?
