Wth...are you serious???

ive been working for 2 weeks and was on my 35 min lunch when I hear someone on the voy call say "xxxx call checkstand 2 please, xxxx checkstand 2." I get on the phone and politely say "xxxx is in lunch." I thought that was that. Until I was called into the boss office by our assistant manager. he wants to know why I didn't answer that call. Again, I politely tell him I was on lunch. He then asks "how long does it take to answer a phone?" before I could answer he says..."It takes kne minute. You have one ding."

i was pissed but but kept quiet. When the store manager came in I was goin to discuss it with him.,, until i heard him say to the assistant, "you're right. It only takes one minute to answer a checkstand call." I asked a senior employee what a "ding"meant, and he said it basically counts against you. I explained the situation and he told me just to let it go but "watch out" next time. Can they do this? I am still on probation and not yet unionized.

your mistake was calling at all even to say you were on lunch.

if lunch is unpaid in your contract, different from break time, leave the store & they can't bug you.  your real problem is you're within probation and they can decided to use you up until the last day and just say it's not working out and boom no job.

You did it wrong. Clock out of lunch, answer the phone, then go outside on your own personal break until you are expected back. You might piss off an associate manager every once in a while but you should tell them that it's slavery for them to make you do something at $0 an hour.

No. The OP was already at lunch. If we follow your suggestion, we'd be wasting our break standing next to the phone waiting for a call.

Nope. OP was on lunch. If it's not a life or death situation all calls, EVEN manager calls can wait. 9/10 times it's just to get a price check, carry out, etc. Something they can do themselves.

although, to keep an angry associate or manager from biting your head of for "having the brazen audacity" to not answer a checkstand call, let your dept head/FE Supervis or know you are going to lunch and are unavailable during that time
