She cancelled my vacation!

And only 2 weeks in advance!

I bought 400.00 plane tickets to go see a friend I had not seen in years since she has moved away. My store manager decides to send out a mass email about how no one can take vacation between ## and ## because other staff are already scheduled to take vacation. I planned this months ago, not weeks ago. Why are we all denied now instead of looking at us all as a group and denying us when we first asked off?

We all kiss ass and do our jobs just for this?

I wouldn't be so mad if I was staying home and doing nothing.

But I am actively travelling. Planning.

****.

I would go explain that to your manager. Make it clear you would like a reFund on your ticket or well not be attending work that week you originally had off.

Call your union rep and tell them what's going on.

If they already approved your vacation, they knew other employees would also be on vacation that week.

That's their problem not yours. I'm on vacation this week and my dept. only has 3 people left because of some other circumstances.... i still haven't been called in and i'm not volunteering.

About 3 years ago there were 3 people in my dept,(Deli), scheduled on vacation the same week and they got burned.  I wasn't even in the department when the vacation schedule was made and all 3 of us had plans so no one changed their vacation.

When did you put in for your vacation and when did the "other staff" put in for theirs?  If you're on the official vacation roster and they approved it, they can't make you change it.  They only exception would be if there was some sort of emergency like a natural disaster or there was some type of epidemic and over half the department was out sick.  Other than that, if they're really that short on help they can either give the other workers more hours or they can ask for help from another store.

Until recently, our bakery department had only 3 full time people: two bakers and one cake decorator.  If one of us went on vacation, the others would have to work six days that week and they would have to borrow help from the deli.

I'm in the bakery too and my manager is working 7 days in a row this week. I feel sorry for her right now.

This is off topic but I really hope they remember to give me my vacation pay too since this was a rescheduled vacation from a while back ago and wasn't on the official vacation calendar. And we got a new HR person this week.

Even if it's a scheduled vacation, we always have to write it down on the clipboard by the timeclock.  You would think the scheduling people and the payroll people would work together on someting like that but they don't.

you could always say you "never got te email." And delete it. Ballsy move, yes, but over $400.00 for plane tickets that you might loose out on is quite a chunk if change.

I've never seen anything that I have to write down for vacations before, the old HR person said my vacation would be ok as long as it was ok with my dept. head.

Sooooooo we shall see. If I don't have a paystub online on Wednesday i'll just throw a fit on Thursday lol.

we had to decide our vacations at the start of the year and submit forms to the store manager or else get vacations assigned to us.  first of all what the hell is that about?  then we also had to put them in the system ourselves if they got approved by the store manager.  otherwise people get scheduled during them anyway and are out of luck.  they've been forced to work it.

it's happened more than once to people who didn't realize they still had to go into eschedule and add the vacation themselves and just assumed approved on paper meant they got it.  they think it's a game.  they lie, they withhold information, they spring surprises on you, they bully.  the union rep just look at you and mouths "needs of the business" and walks off.

She cancelled my vacation! (Update)

#Update

Okay - so I wrote her an email back explaining how this isn't going to happen without some serious problems. Of course I am putting this nicely compared to how blunt I was in the message. After (her) getting an earful from my manager and his wife (who works at another Kroger), she did say I could have it.

So "yay!" I get my vacation back.

It was previously approved and the other vacationers were not even part of my department. I am full time and one of the ones listed to go was not. So as picking and chosing goes - full time over part time. She said the reason she sent it out without me included was because I did not tell her I had planned to go. "Everyone's vacations must be approved through me first."

Yeah - maybe I will in the future, but that caused a lot of unnecessary problems.

Ps. Non-union.

Thanks for the replies!

Recently i had to go into e-schedule and request days off to go see family. I had to spend some time looking at to figure out what options i had. I put in my request a month earlier so there would be enough time. I was later told it was approved and when the next week schedule came up it showed on e-schedule.

On another note, I'll be going on vacation from this Friday until July 1st.

Requests have been submitted both on paper and electronically.

However, since this will be for a month, here's to hoping that I still have a job when I get back. If I don't, ah well.

And yes, it's unpaid vacation. Only white collar jobs get a paid month's vacation.

Also, it was my manager and supervisor's idea that I just request them as "Off - No Pay" instead of a "Leave of Absence". Who knows, that's probably their way of screwing me over. xP

How can you work in Nutrition, which is in most stores, a department of 1, and be off a month?

I guess I should explain myself.

I used to be a nutrition whore (read: started out in nutrition when hired). Then I've been moved to the front end (hence why I can explain some front end cashiering crap). I guess you can call me... CashierSlut? :x

I've also worked Grocery and Dairy between then and now. Also the occasional Drug/GM whenever they're short handed (almost all the time). Though I've expressed my opposition to it and it seems like they've taken that into account.

Oh and luckily, our Nutrition department is a department of... wait for it... 2.

Officially, we only have two people. One has a terrible heart condition that put her out for a few months last time (bless her soul) and another who also works receiving and as a result is unable to do tasks in the department.

Though, occasionally, they'll have someone from the main produce lineup to help. The one closing produce also has to condition our nutrition section.

Off No Pay for a month seems like it would put you at risk.  you need to think about what it does to your benefits and if you're full time if they can use this as a wedge to take that away from you.

you have to be with the company for a certain length of time to earn the right to a leave of absence.  i think it's 5 years in my contract although pregnancy/child birth seems to be a good excuse to make an except for those on the job far less time.

As far as I know you can take a LOA/time off any time you need to, as long as they approve it. So I don't think she's in trouble there, I was just curious about the department issue. :P

I'm part time though. There's no way Kroger or even store management would want to make people full time if they don't have to be. Everyone I work with average at about 25hrs/week, more or less. Besides, whether I earned an LOA or not, I can't exactly be bothered to or be worrying about paperwork and having it potentially "lost" through the system.

At this stage, I don't even get "benefits" from them. It was kind of sad when I learned that McDonalds offers more benefits than Kroger here in my area. xD
