Our department head once told an employee to call in sick to school on an exam day, so that she could come into work. Our store manager told a former employee, who had just gotten a better job, that Kroger should be priority and that he doesn't work around other company's schedules. I overheard this same manager say that he doesn't care if people quit and that they can go work for another store. An employee who beat breast cancer a few months ago was told she had to come into work after trying to call in because she wasn't feeling well after walking for Relay for Life the night before. Our department has been told to never say no to cake orders even though we only have one cake decorator/floor filler available (we do it anyway.) Never are we ever told we've done a good job. So no, these people couldn't care less. Tell your son to quit, he'd be better off at McDonalds.

We are nothing more to Kroger than a warm body.  One of our managers said the other day "We need a BODY on register 12."  Really makes you feel warm and fuzzy about your job.  And they wonder why we don't care if we make que-vision or elms.

I've had some bad teeth before, and I know that it's very painful to keep them in your mouth. One time a bad molar had made me sick for a whole week. What did the doctor tell me to do? He said that I should get it pulled first thing in the morning because it was affecting my nervous system and circulation. If your son has a note from a medical professional stating that he cannot work, then his manager is just a sociopathic jackass. I would DEFINITELY make a visit to your Kroger district manager and explain to him/her what happened. If the DM doesn't do anything, then take your story to a local news team. Workplace scandal is always pretty popular.

I was written up for venting frustrations on a day where it was 90 degrees and I was on the parking lot.

Even AFTER I manned up and admitted I had vented to a supervisor, and tried to explain to manager and co-manager WHY I had done it (hot, tired, sweaty, frustrated, stressed, etc.) I was basically told "You can quit today and we can part ways and we will be okay with that" and "We told you this was what you would do when we hired you."

Management just doesn't care. Usually. I mean I have a few FES who are pretty cool about things as long as we don't get too backed up at our registers. But actual management, as in manager in the title? Hell no. I give 100% now and no more. I still like my job but why give 110% if management barely cares about the 100%. Heck the only reason I tell them I can work if they call me to come in as a replacement is because I need the hours because mine are so low.

I would have called out sick..., so I could take the exam. Education is MORE important than working a shift. But you get bad managers from time to time. I had one manager had a write up slip waiting for me for choosing to clock out at the end of my 4 hr shift to go to a birthday lunch my friends were planning for me. I got up and had to hold on to the walls as I laughed as I was walking out the door of his office. If looks could kill, I'd be dead.

Managers at Kroger are Sociopaths; not criminally insane mind you, but they lack a conscience. They don't care about people or doing the right thing.

Once you accept that, decide if you want to continue to work there. But know that it won't be getting any better.

It seems like the more ****ty programs they produce (ELMS, OSAT, QV), the more unrealistic goals are produced. For example, a co-manager can get chewed out if a single cashier isn't meeting the 95% R/T goal on ELMS, even if there are a dozen cashiers in the 110s. They can also be chewed out if there are too many dips, even if the rest of the store is clean, well stocked, and conditioned. All of the nice managers who are just trying to make a living are ditching Kroger for retailers with lower standards. And I can't blame them. All of the power hungry people are staying, hoping one day they just might be accidentally knocked into a corporate position where the real money is. I mean, where else can you boss around 75-150 employees just by having an associate's degree?

I love my manager and one of the co managers.  The newest comanager should return to wherever she came from. :)  She pisses 99% of the employees off.

People will call in with a car accident, (then show up with no damage to their car), allergies, headache, and notes from doctor feelg oodsaying the need to weekend off, because sore pinky.  Managers don't blink.  Had more than a few who were the like the OPs manager, but had more than a few who are over the job and don't fight it.

Yep. And it didn't make things any better when I laughed and walked out the door.  He knew he was wrong. And he knew if call the union if he TRIED to write me up.

First to the OP (original poster) not a good idea to have your "name" connected with your post.

I find it surprising just how "disconnected" managers are at kroger. Its is like they dont understand their is "another world" when you step outside of kroger. I do "get the point" that they dont care. I do what i can during my shift. Yet as far as going the extra effort...nope not anymore.

they really don't care. they will deny breaks. they will bully you into not taking a break. they will gossip. they will yell at you in front of customers for what someone else is doing or not doing. i had one pissed off at me the other day because i asked him to help a customer with a furniture purchase since I couldn't get away from the desk because I had a line.

They NEVER try and bully me out of a break. They know I'll take it regardless. But they do get pissed off if you don't multiple task.but how are we supposed to help other customers when we are waiting on a customer PLUS having a line?
