Our new store manager is forcing breaks and lunches on everyone. Can she do that? I don't take my breaks because I don't have time. I work in the meat department and am constantly going. Stocking, cleaning, waiting on customers at the counter, etc. NO TIME for breaks. I work my 8 hours with no breaks and I'm fine. Why force them. And as far as lunches go, I like to work a straight 8 hours. Not 8 and a half. I shouldn't be forced to stay an extra half hour that I'm not paid for.

take your breaks. the lunch is between you and the store. i know that my contract states "breaks and lunches are to be taken as close to the middle of the shift as possible"

Just take your breaks and lunches? There may be a sheet you can sign noting that you would like to voluntarily give up your lunches every now and then. It's really just the store manager making sure no one feels OBLIGATED to not take a break or a lunch... which is good, it means your store manager cares.
Yea you have good managers. And from my standoint, I understand that you might be 'in your groove' when you're filling shelves or tagging meat, but taking a 15 minute break surely won't affect you that bad. My managers made me work a 10 hour shift once with only one 15 minute break, so it's much better to be on your side of the fence.

10 hours is a required 3 15 min breaks and a 30 min lunch. I'd have had someone's head on a damn pike by the end of the shift.

You people make no sense at all. You whine about not getting a break, but when it's offered to you then you feel like your freedom is being compromised. Y'know, there are plenty of other retailers that wouldn't even give you a 15 minute break unless you worked more than 6 hours. Any of you ever had the pleasure to work at Bed Bath and Beyond or Best Buy? Where there isn't a gargantuan union to make sure that your ass is guaranteed a rest. I'm just saying, if you don't want to take a break when it's offered, then realize that it might not be offered again.

They need to realize this because I'll tell someone they better take their break when I tell them or they won't get it. I've got to keep things going I can't always come back to them later or work on their time table.
Sometimes people will ask and I'll say no because that very second isn't a good time but I get to them in a timely fashion and make sure they know when I think I can get to them. Usually it's because I'm waiting for somebody to come in so I'll have coverage.
But I've been told I couldn't take a break before or made to take my break for the last thirty minutes of my eight or nine hour shift. It's crap but so are the turnaround shifts that eschedule will do. they violate contract but no one does anything about it.
Federal law requires you be offered a lunch. Not forced to take one.
I'm pretty sure Federal Law does not require employers to give breaks of any length of time. Some states require it but most do not. It's basically up to the employer.
