413 wants you to work off the clock

If I come in as a customer, I am told by management that I have to greet and provide assistance to customers. Who do I talk to in regards to this treatment? He also quizzes me about customer service while I'm on breaks, lunch, or off the clock.  I want to put an end to being singled out by Pat Coe.

Change out of your uniform into plain clothes when you're off the clock shopping (get a locker). When you're taking breaks go to the lounge. You also don't have to respond to anything work-related when on break, though often you'll get a quick 'whenever you're done with break, go blah blah blah'.

That's something I've never been able to get around. I will be in the store shopping on my day off and customers always ask me for help.  I've been there 3 years so they all know me.  I've started putting my cell phone to my ear and pretending I'm on the phone and try to ignore them. I don't take my breaks in the store, I go to Subway next door or sit outside and smoke.

The only way to avoid it is to not be in the store. I've chosen to use my car for breaks and lunches.

Just tell them you're not working.

I wasn't working today and I went into my local Kroger. I was stopped by 3 people while throwing product into my bascart. The only thing that i was wearing Kroger related was my hat.... I need to buy a new hat....

 This is what id do:

1. tell the manager you didn't quite get that joke about greeting customers and assisting them on your day off

2. Ignore him/her

3. Pretend to "agree" and go about your business and don't say a word to anyone

Doesn't matter if you've been there for 30 years and own the store. Tell them you're not working and to find someone else, or shop to a different store.

I did that once.  He yelled at me.  I told him I was off work, on the phone with my daughter and was shopping for my family.  He apologized.  I know it would have been alot easier to just say isle 15.

Well you absolutely, positively cannot get in trouble for not helping customers when off the clock. So who cares how mad they get?
