Whoa a supervisor telling his subordinates that there are consequences for laziness? Sounds like borderline sexual harassment to me. (JK). If you told that to a cashier or a bagger then yea they just have to suck it up and get **** done. If you told it, to say, a manager or someone out of the front end, then yea you're just being a dick. A supervisor is supposed to make sure people are getting their $7.35 an hour by pushing in carts or throwing groceries on a belt. Not sitting in their car or hiding in the bathroom. You're just doing your job and I wish my store's supervisors would follow you.

thanks, that's what upper management said. still makes me nervous. Anything harassment gets sent to corporate. Don't feel like I crossed a line but who knows. People get fired for stupid stuff all the time.

Don't worry about it. I wouldn't directly threaten anyone with write ups.. because you do not have the authority to do so. It's entirely up to managements discretion whether something is worthy of a write up, so don't go getting yourself into a situation where people question the validity of your claims. Just keep management in the loop on things that you know are wrong, ask about things you think might be wrong, and make sure anything you are claiming as a certainty are, in fact, a certainty.

What all is worthy of a write up? My manager keeps threatening us with a write up if we don't use her markdown checklist for checking tables (even though everyone knows how to do it without the paper)

they can write you up for most anything, doesn't mean it'll stick. a supervisor can talk to the dept head or management about a problem employee.  we usually threaten with taking someone upstairs to the manager's office if they become insubordinate.  it happens.

i won't be yelled at by some brat for telling them to focus, do their job and not be goofing off and gossiping.  if i tell you it's your time to be outside, get outside and don't be worried about what other people are doing.  that's not your job.

If your a supervisor and you have the right to write up people then no you can NOT be fired. It looks bad on YOU if your subordinates do not do as asked. If you asked 'jimmy' to put out more chicken in deli many times and he still hasn't done it, a write up is due depending on how you manage or how many times you asked him. While our supervisors cannot fire, or really write people up their reports against the lazy, insubordinate, etc are taken into consideration BEFORE the other side is even considered listening to. We know who the people are.

Basically, you are supervisor/coach, therefore whomever is your subordinate is obligated to do tasks necessary to get his/her job done. If not, corrective action may be needed
