Quitting front end
Permalink

Okay, so I've been working at Kroger for seven months now as a SCO/cashier. A few weeks ago, I got certified as a pharmacy technician in my state and asked the pharmacy manager if I could work with them. We went through the whole HR background check process and I was finally scheduled into the pharmacy department about two weeks ago. I was under the impression that I would be leaving the front end and transferring to the pharmacy for good. I was wrong though. I'm scheduled 30+ hours in the front end and the pharmacy manager schedules me "around my FE schedule." So for the last two weeks I've been working 30+ hours in the front end and 8 hours (consisting of two 4 hour shift days) in the pharmacy. I asked the pharmacy manager why I was still on the front end schedule and she said that it's because she "doesn't have enough hours" for me.

So, my question is: can I (and should I) tell either my front end department manager or HR coordinator that I would like to be removed from the front end schedule for good and only work pharmacy? I don't care if she can only give me 12 pharmacy hours a week I just really wanna get out of the front end I hate the stupid rude customers. I LOVE pharmacy so far. So, do you think they'll let me only work pharmacy and then I could get another part time job to get more money? Any suggestions would be great. :((

If you're happy to not have those extra hours then you might as well talk to them.  Let them know you want to be pharmacy only now.  Don't tell them because it's because you the customers.  Tell them you want to commit to your field and pharmacy.

Even if you have to say you're burned out on the front end...

They'll probably be happy to give you fewer hours overall.  Be polite and diplomatic.  Work with them if they want to slowly transition you off front end over a week or two.

Talk to your front end manager by all means but also make sure pharmacy can get you 12 hrs per week.

Have you thought about getting transferred to Drug/GM?  I see the pharmacist over on our isle with a customer all the time!  Before I got transferred from cashier to Drug/GM I worked in that department part time to pick up extra hours.  I finally got transferred after I told the manager I "wanted to learn something new".  I didn't feel I should say I hate front end, I hate cashier, I hate saying the same thing over and over and over again LOL!

Forgot to mention - one of our cashiers graduated high school last summer and took the pharmacy test.  Kroger didn't have any openings in the pharmacy so he went to CVS and loves it!

I spoke with my HR manager today and she said that it was fine, I'd just have to talk to the pharmacy manager and my front end manager. She also said I'll be getting a lot less hours than I am now but I mean that's fine with me, I could always get a second job like at a bookstore or something. Haha. Thanks y'all!
