Meat department changes

Kroger has this brilliant new idea that every employee in the meat department be trained to cut. I would have no problem with this but they also said we would be given NO raises for the extra work. I'm not cutting **** unless I'm paid as a cutter. They said if I refuse to cut I can be fired. I say bring it on.

Are you union?  If so read your contract.  If not Kroger can probably make you cut.  We have a couple of courtesy clerks that are non union and management has them doing all kinds of jobs in all kinds of departments.  They know they can get away with it.

Yeah we're union. And the contract very clearly states that NO employee is to be forced to use the saws. But they don't seem to care.

You can only cut customer cuts in two or slice a boneless pork loin that customers want.  If someone starts making you cut things for the meat counter/case just tell them no and sight the part of the CBA that says you don't have to.

Haven't posted in awhile but saw this post and wanted to comment. That is Bull????Who comes up with this crap at Kroger. It takes years to gain the experience and knowledge to cut meat. Not anyone can just go in there and cut. They use to have apprenticeship programs which you would get trained little by little by your Meat Manager or another qualified journeyman meatcutter and you would get nicely compensated after you passed your tests. They do not pay you enough to cut meat and risk your fingers with sharp knives and saws. Why should you be expected to cut at $7.50 an hour when the the meatcutters who got hired to cut are making between $13.00-$20.00 an hour. I think it's this company's way of saving money by squeezing out the senior cutters and paying others at a lower wage to do the same job! It use to be a really good paying profession but it's changed through the years. I'd like to see the management people try and cut some meat....they wouldn't last a day. Check with your Union but most the time they are worthless. Transfer to another department in the store if they try and force you to cut. My main point here is that cutting meat is not an easy job, it can be dangerous if you don't know what your doing and you need to know the proper way to cut, etc.....therefore, you need to be paid accordingly.

Better call your union rep.
