awhile ago our district manger made us split our u-scan monitoring stations, and said that we had to have two people over there to run all 8 registers, this hasn't been happening, our store manager has made us run 6 and the other person scheduled for u-scan is sent on register, so they don't have to schedule someone else. our managers would often make us open the 8 to shut em down when rush is over...
i've recently been only running one side, and lots of people have been getting pissy with me, because we get backed up and i refuse to run both sides without the monitoring stations side by side, or a partner. they made it harder on us.
whats the best way to tell them no, i won't run the other side, without help, or without the stations being moved back together?
The best way to tell them "no, I won't do it" is to give them two weeks notice. Tada, you won't have to!
No seriously, every department is understaffed, always. There's always more work than people and hours to do it in. I don't think store management can even do anything about it without bending rules, and that comes at a cost and you can never depend on that happening.

wouldn't refusing to do so helping with under staffing on the front end? what about if i sign off of registers when I have no customers?

Clarify please. I'm not even sure what you're asking.

if i continue to refuse to run both sides of u-scan will they start scheduling another cashier instead of taking one of the u-scan attendants away?
also, if i continue to sign off of my register(when im on one) and it messes up q-vision, will that also help under staffing?

No, they will most likely still schedule the same way they have been. You can thank eschedule and its schedule ratings for that.
As for quevision, the score is unaffected by whether or not you're signed in if it isn't being used, so you shouldn't be wasting your time signing in to a checklane unless you're actually using it.

Truth. Every Kroger manager should read this. Having your entire produce department sign onto registers without using them is not going to help with compliance. There are heat sensors that determine whether you're in compliance or not.

Those heat sensors are a load of bulls-h-i-t but then again anything associated with quevision is bulls-h-i-t.

I don't know about that. The sensors work. The system works (at least somewhat.) The problem lies in how our company uses the system and how much faith it puts in the accuracy and relevance of the metrics the system spits out.

We have a supervisor who will fuss at me to sign in even though the register won't be used. I usually don't play that game, I'll sign in, take a random customer and go so the register at least counts.
You can dip even with all lanes open.
What I don't get is I'll see 1 red spot on lane data, say 2.1 for just over two minutes wait time, during a half hour and the graph will show a big dip. It's never made sense. but hell I've seen nothing but green and seen a dip but usually the lane data clearly supports the dip in the graph.

I tried to explain this to my manager, floor supervisor, and FEM once. They insisted that it "helped" when i asked if they could show me the data to prove it - I was told "WE DON'T HAVE TO 'PROVE IT'. DO WHAT WE SAY OR BE FIRED FOR INSUBORDINATION!"
