I am one of the lucky ones. I had 3 interviews last week. I had to choose between Kroger and 2 other job opportunities. Guess which on I chose? I would appreciate, so I can sleep tonight, anyone that can say anything remotely positive regarding their work experience at Kroger. Anything. Anyone. Okay lie to me.

I love my job at kroger.  Long hours, low pay, hard work and disorganized managers that expect 20 hours of work done in 10 hours.  What could be better?

What state are you in and what did you apply for?

Congrats and good luck!

Ps.  This site is not sponsored by Kroger.  I would not use any info that would reveal what store you are at.  I highly recommend you take your name and DOB out of your profile.  nevermind.  You already removed name...  :)

Always remember, it's just a job. Show up to work on time. Do whatever your supervisor tells you to do. Go home. Don't have any unrealistic expectations about hours or pay. I read way too many posts by new hires who expect to be full time and top pay rate three months after they are hired.

There are some good Kroger stores to work at and some bad ones.    I'd say it's 35% good and 65% bad.

Hey Stella -

Thanks for coming to the Kroger Employee Forum and making a post! I hope you come often during your time with the company.

Anyway, to respond to your Q....

Unfortunately I can not give you any positive feedback about Kroger. One of the other posters said to pretty much treat it as just a job. Go in, work, then leave. try not to get involved in all the BS that infests this dump. Its there! But if you step gently you can avoid a lot of it.

look - its a slow suicide working there. very meager pay increases. do you even know how that works? go ask for a union handbook then look up your job in the back of the book to see how they nickel and dime you every 6 months. You'll be 110 yrs old by the time you make $15.

Good luck.

My overall experience has been positive.

The pay sucks for everyone starting out, but I made full-time quickly as a stocker, and the pay caps out at about $14.00/hr without a promotion. If you stay positive and energetic (or just fake it really well), you can move up in the company and skip over the nickel & dime raises. It's all going to depend on your store, your effort, and how big a god complex the manager(s) have. Just keep your chin up!

Depends on what department. You didn't specify. If you drew the short stick and got Front End, you have my sympathies.
Better start working out on weights at least once per week and making sure your shoulder, back, arm muscles are all toned.
You'll need it for getting those shopping carts inside. Personally I bicycle a lot and so my calves and hamstrings are in good shape and look great.  But not from Kroger. From bicycling.
Thankfully the end justifies the means and it means that I can push 11 of those suckers inside at a time, just by pushing the weight into my legs.

If you are any other department, good luck. Kroger is about getting the most work for the least amount of wages paid for the least amount of labor doing the job at any given time.
Front End is the most visible. The other departments are the same, just not as noticeable to the customer or employees.

It's awesome, fun, not easy, and there's a lot of room for upward mobility if you have a good attitude. It might not be your thing, but I dig it.

I'd say try not to care, accept that it's a low paying part time job.  If you try to excel and care about your job you will only become angry and disappointed.  Just do what they say, nothing extra.

One good thing - you can change your availability anytime you want to.  At least at my store you can.  And if you don't really get along with someone don't worry, they will quit or be transferred.

If you don't get along with your co-managers it'll suck. They usually stay around for about 2 years v.v

Out of 7 in the last three years there has only been one that we didn't like.  She's the one that took the water away from the courtesy clerks.  She got fired.

Throw in my 2 cents...

You will encounter drama/bs at the store and the other employees you work with. Try your best not to get involved with it cause you dont need more stress than what you will encounter working at kroger. As others stated "treat it like a job" if you are stocking and not on the front end you can keep yourself busy and out of drama/problems if all possible.

Do what you can but there are no real incentives to make one excel or "shine" in this company. Try to get a real grasp of what your position covers so at least you can do what must be done because at times depending on your shift you cant get to everything.

I started as a cashier and now work in Drug/GM.  I spend most days going back and forth to the register.  They still expect me to do all my work in Drug/GM even though I spend half my day on a register.  It flat wears you out.  My advice - mess that register up so bad they never want you on it LOL!!!

I love Drug/GM though. Learn that RF asap and it will make things so much easier.

RF? Mess up and get canned? Wow great advice. I look at it this way; I have been married 3 times, I can't deal with any kind of hell. HA.

RF = handheld computer used for ordering, backstock, tagging, and a million other things.

Register = a personal hell that you will be chained to since they will train you to use it.

If you work day GM or day grocery you're gonna spend half your ****ing shift shagging carts or running a register, because at Kroger it's profit first, customer second. If you get written up for not finishing your stuff within X hours, get the union involved if you're in it. If not, then just remember not to sign anything but the back of your paycheck.

In my store, Drug GM isn't called up too often. Produce usually is for some reason.

If you have decent management, i think Drug GM would be an ok dept. to work in.

Well, I love a challenge. And if any of the "associates" are as funny as most of you, I'll be fine. Yep, been chained to a register before Aldi's good pay, crap work, lousy entitled young preppy District Managers. Talk about HELL. So..if Target calls, run?

Depends on the store to be honest, luckily I'm at a good one now with fairly friendly management.   Though that will probably be changing soon.

If you have the work ethic, and show initiative you can easily move up over time.

I work very hard, but I enjoy most of it. (I work grocery as a backup/manager)  I like seeing how my and my crews efforts drive sales and the satisfaction from doing a good job and seeing a happy customer makes it worth all the bad days.

I go around several times a year to help out at struggling stores/stores going through remodels and I can honestly say it really really does depend on the store how your experience will be.    But remember, co-managers come and go all the time, I wouldn't get too fussed if you don't get along with them(most of them are new).   Store managers usually stay for a while though.

Aldi hires district managers as interns in college so you'll work for a 20-something DM there. At Kroger it seems like DM's are at least pushing 50 and have put in some serious time with the company. They're usually very easy to get along with. However, store management is a whole different story. You will have a store manager and anywhere from 2 to 4 co-managers depending on the store size. These are the types you'll come across:

1. The noob.

These are co-managers fresh from the brilliant Youth Corps. of Hitler -- I mean, from Kroger's prestigious M1D program. They are usually there because they majored in philosophy and wanted to get a living salary. They might feel a bit entitled from time to time but they are usually the coolest managers you'll get. One problem though is that they are also shuffled around a lot since, you know, Kroger wants every manager to be "experienced" in different environments.

2. The shadow.

These managers are the ones you'll barely notice or remember (which can be great or just boring). They usually have a few years of slave-driving under their belt and are still waiting for that store manager position to pop up so they can finally put a down payment on an entry level BMW and send their child Sally to the wholesome private school on the east end of town. Stay out of their way and they'll probably leave you alone.

3. The dictator.

Of course there are very douchey managers at Kroger as well. They CAN be new, but they're usually the ones who have been working there since the 80s or beyond. They will be the ones who write you up for getting a 94% on ELMS or for putting dry grocery on a dairy U-boat. Avoid this manager at all costs and look for a new job if they become a problem.

Ok, I was just kidding about the register.  That's why I put that big ole LOL after what I said.

Dammit would you just leave please? You must've been something special to get fired from McDonald's. I'll bet you're one of management's pets who would work for free simply to feel that SOMEONE values you as a human being.

Looks like this "newbie" started a sh$t storm. This was not my intention. In addition, I would like to say scheduling got a little out of hand before I stepped onto the sales floor. I was hired for nights, weekends, and holidays. Okay..kid needs to eat, I'm good with that. They ask for availability, okay I'm available, but could I at least get off before 7 p.m. on Sunday to get my kid ready for the school week which starts September 2nd? Lord! You would have thought I had asked for a million bucks!

Of course I conceded, and am still employed. First day; 4 hours. I say day because I was to work nights. I suppose I am looking to public assistance next. Any other single parents going this route?
