To early for promotion ?

I have been working at Kroger now for 5 months. I'm a bagger/cleaner and will push carts when ever they need me to and come in when they call me in . I have only called in ounce because of my high school graduation. I have open availability and currently average 30 hrs a week. I want to move to departments but I don't want to make the other baggers mad that have been there longer than me . The baggers with more seniority than me though either have asked to move and aren't reliable enough or never ask. Right now my kroger is hiring for a bunch of different positions I am interested in the overnight stock clerk but would I be out of line asking to move up after 5 months ? I get compliments from cashiers and fez about being a hard worker and reliable person.

It never hurts to ask. Having said that though, at Kroger, seniority is everything, at least from the official standpoint. You can at least tell your manager that you'd be interested in a promotion so they shouldn't hire a newcomer for the same promoted position.

Seniority isn't everything anymore.  They added language to the last contract.  Promotions are based on skills and ability now.  Basically, it means fast, hard, independent, and reliable worker.

We are desperate for night stockers at my store.  If the OP is 18, and wants to work nights, ask the day grocery manager and store manager.

It is very fast paced and a lot of work needs to be done overnight.  Day crew moves at half speed because of helping customers, relief cashiering and because they can.  My managers have tricked several people to move from days to nights and the people don't last.   The truth is that they can't handle the work load after being spoiled on days and the pay is too low.  Two have been there for over a year and were making $8 an hour + night premium.  Now, they make $8.15 + night premium like the baggers and anyone else being hired currently.

I keep anything I say focused on Kroger standards and expectations to teach the new people how everything is to be done.   Maybe it is me!  Bagboy doesn't know me and already said he would do the opposite of what I teach just because I sound like an ahole. :(

You can definitely leap frog ahead of any baggers if you want to get into a different department. For night stock you need to be 18, and a lot of baggers aren't 18. Night stock is also known to pretty much take ANYBODY that applies or asks to be moved there. That is good for you RIGHT NOW, but once you become part of night crew, you will hate that. The turnover is pretty much just as bad as front end, or any department for that matter. Lots of unreliable people that will call in because the store manager isn't the one picking up the phone -- it's the grocery manager. That's another thing, stay the hell out of your grocery manager's way and don't ever get into bad gossip about him. It comes back around pretty quick, and I think we all know that the only clerk in the whole ****ing store making $45,000 salary is probably doing a little more than pushing papers and yelling at people. So yea, respect your managers, respect your grocery manager, and try to learn whatever they need you to learn. Don't be that ass hat that constantly moans about working the canned vegetable aisle. Somebody's gotta do it.

lol, so true.  The veggies aren't that bad now that they are SRP.  Ticks me off when I work after a slacker that doesn't level properly and throws full flats on top of half empty flats!  Then, sends rest to backstock.  PIA for next person to work the aisle and ordering.

Everyone thinks I pick and choose what I do.  I know I can do certain tasks twice as fast as others and do leave the time consuming  tasks to other people when I am in charge of the night crew.  I do not demand anyone move faster, just go as quick as you can and follow my directions.  That simple.

Example:

Change bale:  5 minutes: tie, dump, install liner, and load into salvage trailer.  Day crew:  15-30 minutes each for 2 people!  They spend most of the time complaining that they have to change the bale!  :)

I can and will run and condition any aisle anytime I am asked.  They are all easy but some tasks  take a little longer.

As for my direct night manager, everyone knows what he is like.  And, you should hear some of the smack he says about me..  He made a comment to me a few weeks ago that borders on harassment and retaliation.  I don't care if it was his relative on same crew I spoke back to.  They asked a question, I answered.  He was very unprofessional.  He needs to retire soon...

I didn't mean it that way; I'm sure. I'm very much a devil's advocate so I enjoy turning things around on people or doing the total opposite, just 'cause. I don't think you're that bad of a person, tbh. Someone I would enjoy screwing around at the expense of - maybe. Just to see how far I could go before you say "Okay, enough.". :)

@OP: Go for it buddy! Get that clerk money!

I know you like to tease.  I have seen so many people come and go over the years that it doesn't phase me anymore.

OP, if you are 18 ask your manager to pick up some extra work in another dept. and see if you like it. As a CC I've worked in Front End File Maintenance for Fri, Sat, and Sun for 24 hours and the rest on the Front End itself to bring it up to 40. I was promoted to Clerk and reduced my Front End hours after 3 months of employment because all the other CC's didn't want to do what I do in our Pricing/File Maintenance Dept. Three weeks after working in the department the Dept. Manager claimed me and said I have she wanted me those three days from now on and when she or our other qualified scan coordinator retires based on ability and availability, I will have the position. Our Lead Scan Coordinators get roughly $17 an hour and get a **** ton of overtime because the managers want our scan coordinators to work the promo aisle or some other task.

Like I said, try working in other departments to see what suits you. GL OP

Ditto. Kroger has a lot of different positions in store. You might discover you like arranging flowers, cooking chicken, or even working night grocery most. Try to get as much exposure to other dept's as possible so you know what you like and don't like doing. Nobody 'likes' doing everything. I honestly would hate working deli but I don't mind baking as much. You might even be able to split your time between two departments if they only need a marginal amount of extra help.
