My boyfriend works at Kroger that has a union. He said he just got suspended for 3 days for being 4 minutes late to work. I am trying to find a copy of the employee handbook to see if there is a grace period for being late. Does anyone know what the policy is for Indianapolis Kroger and being late? Also they said his 3 day suspension would be at their convenience and he is finishing out his shift and then they will let him know what days he is being suspended.
I don't think there's any "grace period" at all with Kroger. Either you show up on time, or late. Being early is ok as long as you don't punch in until your scheduled time.
And what the other anon said. Has he ever been written up before for similar stuff? Is there more to the story than he's telling?
Is he in the Union? Either way, tell him to find his shop steward ASAP --the shop steward will know the rules, and if he is getting written up (in our district), the shop steward is allowed to be present AT the write up.
3 day suspension for 4 minutes.... hmmm..... that makes sense, NOT! 'We're so angry that you weren't here for those 4 minutes that we don't want you here for 3 days'.... Sounds like a petty excuse to try to rid of an employee. There's probably another reason in mind.
Also, we have that same 7 minute rule at my store. The only difference between clocking in 7 minutes early and 7 minutes late is that the manager calls you up on the intercom for some random task if you're early and waste your extra time.

Yup.
Jimmy: "Well, I better come in 7 minutes early today since it's busy."
Manager: "Oh look Jimmy's coming in 7 minutes early! Better throw his ass on a register for at LEAST 7 minutes."
*Jimmy starts clocking in at regular time*
Manager: "If you don't get A, B, C, and D done before your shift is up, I'm writing you up!"
I clock in 7 mins early and go right to working and leave 7 minutes early. Nine months now and no one has ever said anything about it at my location. Depends on the different managers rules for sure.

and this is where 75% of us are now.
That's pretty much how Front End tends to work. I don't know about the other departments.
at my kroger when management suspects people of stealing or eating food not paid for but do not have it on video, they write them up for little stuff like being 8 mins late to fire them that way
Having been a steward for many years, if they were going to suspend someone, I would make them do it immediately after the violation, not on the days they see fit afterward.
either you've done something that warrants discipline or you have not. "Three days of our choosing" is bull****.

Being 8 minutes late is worthy of a write-up. And if you for some reason are 8+ minutes late three times within 3 months or whatever the write-up effective period is, then I don't think you're putting much effort into this job. Either change your availability or show up on time.
I know front end has to worry about getting people out on time for breaks, lunches, and going home, but in other departments it's more relaxed. At least at my store it is. As long as you get the work done and you work the number of hours you're scheduled then they usually don't say anything about it. Hardly anybody in my department actualy works the shift they're scheduled. Some show up a half hour to an hour late. Some show up early. The work still gets done on time though.

And I'm sure your OSAT suffers because my store is the same way. It's not customer 1st oriented.
