Red head stepchild dept.

I work in deli and were like the "worst" dept Kroger has (this is a proven fact, just ask our co-workers, the sales figures and our store management) No matter how much work they pile on we must get it all done using one/two person crews. That means that when someone is taking a break and customers come to the counter you better stop making banana pudding, smile and wait on customers. No problem but when one of those crewmembers is a manager forget it, first they aren't physically located where they can work counter. They know all the tasks that make working (real work) not necessary.

Ex:Did you know that if you stand out on the sales floor, filling the cheese shop or talking to other dept. mgrs. that you don't have to pay attention to customers needs or counter help needing back up?

I was told that since I'm part-time there are no benefits and I don't get overtime pay even if it's past 40 hours. The second thing isn't true but there are benefits - to Kroger

One of our store managers keeps buying pizza for the meat dept. because of their sales figures being so high. Heck yeah they are high, I can't even afford to eat mean anymore with the prices being so high. I only make $7.30 an hour. But guess what? He buys Kroger frozen pizza, brings it to deli kitchen and has us cook it for him.

Taking a break is very difficult, you have to stagger them, not go when there are customers and when there are enough co-workers to cover the dept. Fat chance! The other day I tried 3 times to take a break, finally it was 45 mins til time to go home and I got a break.

Then I worked an 8 hour shift, bought some food and was told I should go to a u-scan so I'm not taking cashiers from customers, when did I give up my right to be a Kroger customer, hell I was using money I earned working for Kroger.

kinda odd, assuming uve worked over 6 month or a year, cant remember, as long as you work at least 24 hours a week, you are eligible for benefits as long as you apply for them. Might be different since i work at Fred Meyer. also, state law says, any work hours over 40 a week has to be over time pay regardless if your part time as well as working more than 5 days even if you havnt worked 40 hours. Also, breaks are not mandatory, only lunches are if you work for 5 hours or more a day. and the whole going to U-scan, if your buying something, you dont HAVE to go to self checkout, you can chekcout at the deli since at that point you are a paying customer. but i checkout at u scan out of curtacy for the crew because i know theyre busy.

you need to reread state law because if you work 6 hours you get a mandated break and no benefits for part time, plus I was being ironic. Are you implying that I am not courteous because I am waiting my turn, like every customer, to check out? If your too busy judging my forum maybe your not listening, I thought that's what this forum was for....

Deli is a tough, thankless department. I could have written that opening post, myself.

and yes, I hate it when deli has to take time and energy to do the cooking/prep for other departments, or store/manager meetings. A pizza doesn't bother me, but we had a HUGE order recently where we had to make 80some trays for a meeting at a regional office that is close by. They do that crap to us all the time.

First of all, you need to look up the definition of ironic.  Second, you need to learn the difference between your and you're.  Third, laws regarding breaks and lunches vary from state to state.

They always make the deli make food for the department head meeting every week. Or else they hijack our ovens and make us cook something.

Why do they have to have food at every meeting?  One time I saw them take a Rubbermaid cart loaded with barbecue, buns, chicken, and cakes and pastries from the bakery department to one of those meetings.  It's not as if they're all day meetings.  Usually they're only two to three hours.

2 to 3 hours? What the heck are your department heads doing?

In my store they go all out and make a freaking meal for a 1 hour meeting.

our dept meetings are less than 45 mins most times. wtf are they talking about for so long? can't be sales figures, forcasts and placements of endcaps and sale items. that doesn't take THAT long.

Jesus.
