How To Bottle Room?

I just recently started working at Kroger. I'm a courtesy clerk, so yeah, I'm everyone's b*tch.

For the past week I did what was supposed to be called 'training'. I personally wouldn't consider it training because I basically went out onto the floor myself and began bagging, grabbed carts when told to, did price checks, go backs, cleaning, etc. On all those departments, I do fairly well IMO. Easy stuff.

This past Thursday was supposed to be my final training day. That day was when I was told by one of the supervisors, an older lady, that I had to be shown how to operate the bottle room because I was going to be there until closing (12a.m), so I needed to know what to do.

So I was thrown into the bottle room with some guy who VERY briefly went over what to do. I could barely understand him over the noise of the machines, and he talked like he had sh*t in his mouth. He pretty much told me how I had to keep all the bins evened out; if one was filling up past a certain point with cans/bottles, I was to scoop however much up and transfer it to another bin. Keep them all leveled out. Then, when one did fill to max capacity, I was to take the entire bin out, set it off to the side, and place a new bin inside. He also showed me how to assemble the bins.

However, he didn't say what to do with the bins that are already full after they're placed to the side. Do they just sit there? He also didn't say on what to do if say, the machines get stuck/go down or whatever. How do I fix that?

Over all, I'm not sure if I can fully trust him on how he explained everything to me. Was everything he told me correct on what goes on in the bottle room? Is this really the procedure, or can it vary from Kroger to Kroger?

Also, I'm a 22 y/o female. I never once seen or heard of a female having to deal with the bottle room other than cleaning it. Which, by the way, I was told to clean it since I was there until closing. So did the old lady supervisor mess up in having me learn to do the bottle room when in actuality all I'm supposed to be doing is cleaning it?

Finally, at the very end of the shift, this guy who is also a courtesy clerk who was doing closing with me, I seen him taking the bin that was full from the bottle room and transferring it to the back of the store. I wasn't told that had to be done either. Now, I'm not a weak female but taking those bins and using whatever it's called to transfer them from one end of the store to the other seems like pretty heavy work.

Sorry if all my questions are kinda sprawled out, but what I really need to know...

1. Was the procedure the guy told me on how to operate the bottle room correct? Does it vary from Kroger to Kroger?

2. What do I do with the bin(s) that are filled to max capacity? Do I leave them off to the side in the bottle room, take them to the back of the store right then or do I or someone else do it at closing time (if I'm there til that time)?

3. Do they really have females work the bottle room other than cleaning? Note: It's honestly something I haven't seen before. So far, all I've seen working back there are MEN.

4. If the machines happen to get stuck, stop or whatever, how do I fix that?

I'd just like to hear people's own experiences/opinions. Thanks.

And I'd like to ask: What IS a bottle room?

I've heard it mentioned on here plenty of times, but never came across one during my tenure with Kroger.

Congratulations!  You have been trained successfully...

In some states, a deposit is charged on most plastic and glass bottles.  People bring them to the bottle room at large retailers to get their deposit back.

You are no one's bich.  We don't care if you are female.  We are an Equal Opportunity Employer.

The gadget to move the full bottle bins is called a pallet jack.  Make wide turns around corners.  We take them to our backroom and put them in our salvage trailer.  He might have waited until the end of the shift because that is his routine.  Or, he needed to get a key to the salvage trailer from the customer service counter.  Normally, the bins go in the backroom right away and get stacked(need to be trained on how to use the stacker if they allow you to.  You are 18+ so I don't see why not.).  Always put glass bins on the bottom.  Or do like our CCs and just drop them in the way in the backroom so we can put them in the right spot when we come in.

OP, you will need more training.  Ask for training with someone else.  The leveling the bins is simple stuff.  I do not know how to unjam the machines or reset them.  But, every once in a while, trash and liquids cover sensors or plastic gets jammed on the belts.  You will need to be trained on how to unjam the machines safely without losing a finger and how to reset the machine.

I think these are the ones we use at our store except we have a 10 cent deposit here.

Oh damn, that's one fancy piece of machinery there.

Yeah... we don't have those down here in my district. The only thing we recycle are plastic bags, and those large water containers people bring in.

Thanks Anonymouse1!

I guess all I can really do is when I go back in and if they attempt to put me in the bottle room, say that I still need more proper training on it. The guy who originally showed me, was way too brief.

I sure wish mine didn't.

But ya know, the more I think back...I really do think I was just supposed to have the bottle room set up for the morning. As in, have it cleaned and also take care of the bins. But like I said I shall find out once I go back in!

No problem.  I am not sure how your store does it.  At my store the CCs clean the bottle room and keep machines running.

You seem energetic.  Maybe you skeered the other CC and made him forget what to teach you.  As for learning unjamming the machines, you just have to wait for it to break down and then have someone show you.  I think the machines stop most of the time because the bins are full.

One last question I forgot to add.

If I happen to be doing closing (my store closes at midnight), do I take all the bins in the bottle room that are filled to the max to the back of the store and put new bins into the machines? Or if theyre only partially filled do I just leave them so they can continue getting filled the next day?

I would only take the completely filled ones to the salvage trailer.  You can combine the half full bins if you have time but I think they just leave them in the machine until they are completely full.

Women are required to do the bottle room, too.

Always wear gloves when sealing with bins and bottles. You will get cut if you don't.

We don't level bins off here. Full = time to replace. Full bins should probably go to the salvage truck, but ask. If we leave them off to the side or in night crew's way they do it for us :) Practice using the pallet jack. You will be able to move them that way.

Always, always snap the sides into the bottom of the bins or somebody will have a big mess. When changing put bins make sure to push the new, empty one all the way in. Clean put any debris before sliding the empty bin in, if jecessary.

Our machines can be quieted by opening the door (key required), turning the knob to Standby, and pushing ok. Turn off standby when done replacing. Some glass machines do not separate dark and clear glass and it has to be done by hand.

 No.

They are picked up by two different companies.

We call it the salvage trailer at my store.  But one side is for double stacked bottle bins and the other side is for bales, totes and pallets.  The grocery/perishable driver picks up pallets, kmp totes, meat/dairy/produce black trays and bales.  The bread person picks up empty bread trays.  The milk guy picks up empty milk crates.  A driver from the recycling company picks up the bottle bins.  On a very, very rare occasion, the grocery/perishable driver picks up empty milk crates.

I think they only have it in states where there is a deposit on bottles, in Arizona we don't give a f*** about the environment so we don't have any but I'm pretty sure our neighbors to the west have them.
