Do we get extra pay for working holidays?

Since my store already seems dead set on everyone working Thanksgiving, and then (shudder) Christmas coming soon after that, "if" (when) I work Thanksgiving Day, will I see extra cash in my paycheck for that?

Because what kind of a ba-st-ard company has employees working holidays and not provide compensation of some sort?

Yea, I personally hate holidays. They are a pain in the ass in every way, Christmas included!
But if I am going to work for a clusterphuck like Kroger on a holiday where I KNOW I will face ten times or more the crap I face each day, I would prefer to receive some sort of bonus, compensation, or whatever that in its own little way says 'Thanks'.

Then again look who we work for, saying 'thanks' would be about as possible as a schedule that provides all the labor needed when needed.

See what your union contract says.  Ours we get from 4 to 8 hours extra pay if we work during the holiday week.  After 2 years we get 50 cents more per hour if we work the actual holiday, plus the extra days pay.

I'm not sure how to look at our union contract.
Would HR have a copy?

$7.25 an hour is adequate compensation for working a holiday in my opinion. Where I see the greed is when you're deliberately underscheduled to make the store look more efficient to the district manager.

Ours is online, you might try searching for it.  Or talk to your union rep at the store.  You can't call HR because I'm going to have them tied up on the phone with my complaint against the floor supervisor who wants to beat me up.  You know Kroger only has ONE employee there and Thanksgiving is a few weeks away so would you mind if I call first?  LOL, thanks!

I, personally, don't get anything extra. Horrible contracts and such. We do close at 6 on thanksgiving, however. Closed Christmas.

Ask around and find out who your union steward is at your store, then request to see a copy of the union book. That's the only way to find out for sure, because I think something like holiday pay varies by contract, time worked and from division to division. I get paid double time (extra eight hours pay) for working holidays, but that doesn't mean you will, too.

Looks like we have a district manager on the board. Maybe even a division president as awful as they pay them.

Probably more like a maxed out cashier under an older contract. Triple time.

Under my contract they're suppose to ask for volunteers to work on Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Eve.  If not enough people volunteer, then the people with the lowest seniority get scheduled first.  Then, they just go down the list until they have enough people.

This is why I made myself unavailable on Thursdays. They'll never suspect that I want Thanksgiving off if I get every Thursday in the year off.

You're the reason the company wants to get rid of you (too expensive) and replace you with part-time combo's who get 30 cents more than minimum wage but do the exact same job.

The company has tried to get rid of us old timers, but have failed in every effort. They tried taking away our 6th day, not working us on time and a half Sundays, but through all their BS , the company lost in arbitration. Ralphs is a ****ty company and have had to pay all of us back pay. Short of stealing money, they cant get rid of us because of harrassment. They lose every case.

Talked to our HR today.
She said that basically it goes by seniority.

That if I ask for it off, if enough people ask, I probably won't get it.
BUT that they try to be fair and put most people down for short shifts.
Example, as a courtesy clerk I may only work four hours Thanksgiving Day.

Still want to know if I will be compensated for it.

The ONLY reason I work on SOME holidays is for holiday pay. If we didn't get holiday pay, the *koff koff sniffle sniffle I don't feel so good. I'm sorry (not) but I won't make it in today*

Find a union steward and either ask them or get a contract from them. They legally can't refuse to provide you one if you're union or live in a right-to-work state.

Well I've been working at Kroger for 7 years now and the only Thanksgivings I've ever had to work are the ones before I made myself unavailable on Thursday. So only 2. The rest of the years I've been off, so it's pretty effective. Obviously it might vary at other Krogers though.

I'm sorry I called you a liar. I used to live in Buena Park so I know all about the cost of living in that area - almost as bad as the traffic.

Request a union handbook? How, when everytime  I try I am told they don't have any printed yet? And it's been two years for me working in my store...lol. And yes, I am asking the uni stewart this, it's like they don't want me to know anything.

Then you are being either misled or the person you ask just doesn't care. If you aren't satisfied with your union steward's attitude and behavior, then you need to contact a local union representative and express your dissatisfaction with your union steward while requesting a copy of the book.

Thank you for the apology.  I used to be proud to work for Ralphs, but since Kroger became involved, it has gone downhill. Everone is minimum wage, 10 years to reach journeyman.

I agree. A steward should provide you with a copy if it covers you, but the local rep will have no reason to turn you down, as it's a violation of federal law to refuse to provide a copy of a union contract to an employee whom is covered under said contract. LMRDA section 104.

Also, I have stumbled upon the collection of all contracts which are required to be provided to the DOL which cover >1000 employees (pretty much every Kroger local). They arent all current, but for anyone who has trouble finding a copy, it's a start.
