Private selection is very hit-or-miss for me. Their ice cream is pretty good, but their mason jar desserts are not worth the $3, they're basically glorified pudding and the jar doesn't even have a proper lid so no reusing it. I also didn't like their vegetable lasagna. Today though I bought some lemon garlic herb finishing butter and it was delicious! I liked it a lot.
So what are some of your favorites and what should be avoided?
The ice cream is definitely good but I never buy it. I only got it one time because it was free. The problem I have with the Private Selection label is the quality isn't enough to justify the price. I'd rather buy something cheap and be pleasantly surprised than spend a little more money on something and be disappointed. One Private Selection item that I thought was absolutely terrible was the pizza. I'd rather have a Tombstone or even one of those $1.00 Totino's over one of those nasty Private Selection pizzas. I guess the Private Selection meats and cheeses in the deli are okay. I'd certainly buy those over the overpriced Boar's Head.
I like the Moose Tracks chocolate ice cream, it's my favorite. I can't think of any other Private Selection brand that I've tried that I bought more than once. I agree the pizza was horrible.
Their garlic pasta sauce is also pretty good. Or as good as Prego, anyway. I know that for some people that definitely would't be considered "good" but I'm not picky and I like Prego.
The ice cream is pretty much the best PRSL product I've had, very similar in density to the ultra premium brands like ben & jerrys/haagen dazs. Customers don't seem to buy it much here though. I actually liked the pizza too, but only after I had refrigerated leftovers lol. For some reason it tasted 10x better when it was cold to me.
I will also say that the ice cream is really good, but we rarely buy it because of the price. Some of the deli meats and cheeses aren't bad. The garlic and herb chicken was like eating chicken that fell on the ground and someone just picked it up after it rolled around in grass some. However, as expensive as Boar's Head is, if I had a choice, I'd take that. It doesn't have all that extra crap in it.
I had their pizza once, and I can't remember for the life of me what the flavor was, but I loved it. Haven't found that particular flavor since.
I agree. The original praline pecans were addictive. I'd serve them at parties and they'd be gone. Friends would ask me if I made them. I'd tell them they are Krogers. The new ones along with Honey vanilla bourbon pecans coating is so gross I stopped buying them and warned friends.
