This weekend we had a "major snowstorm" predicted to hit us. We were so busy our manager made everyone stay over a minimum of 1 hour. To make things better, she didnt tell half of the employees. I only found out because the FEM was telling the cashier I was bagging for. I ended up with a 9 hour shift. Is she even allowed to make us stay? Especially because I'm still only a minor and I dont know if I'm even allowed to work that long.
Depends on the contract in your area. In mine you can't be made to stay over. Any schedule changes after noon Saturday before the next schedule must be agreed to by the person involved.
In Mi, our contract allows a manager to make overtime mandatory. They have to give you an hour warning before the end of your shift. They can make you stay 2 hours over your regular shift.
You are a minor. The Federal laws trump anything in the union contract. I am sure the contract specifies what is allowed for a minor tho.
If anything, ask your shop steward. File a grievance if they broke any rules by making you stay over.
I read the sign they had about labor laws and minors and their is nothing about how long you are limited to work. I also asked around and if they give me the required amount of breaks and lunches Im okay (which they did). Im just mad how the manager avoided being the "bad guy" and not telling us directly that were forced to stay over.
