I got my monthly newsletter from UFCW 75 today and had myself a little laugh about it.
There was an article in it talking about how Walmart is everything that's wrong with retail. About how Walmart is owned by one of the richest families in the world, surely they can afford to give their workers more hours, it's a shame that they only hire part time associates, and force full time associates to pay more in insurance. The average Walmart employee after all makes only $8.80 an hour!
What the hell do they think Kroger is? When a coworker of mine went to another store to be the bakery manager there, did they promote anyone else to full time to make up for her position? Heck no! Lets schedule 3 people 20 hours a piece instead of giving one 40 hours and just hiring one part timer! Minimum wage in Ohio is $8.10 now, pretty good compared to some states. How much do I make after 3 years? 8.45. Now to be fair, when I started, minimum wage was only $7.45. But in all, they've only given me 35 cents in raises, the rest were forced on them. So the average Walmart employee still makes more than me.
So UFCW, tell me more about how Walmart is the root of all evil, and why Kroger is sooooooo much better. :) Just thought that was funny, lol.
many non-union workplaces start their employees off with a higher base pay. Getting a raise in a non-union workplace is VERY hard and only the people that suck up super hard to management even get considered.
Walmart also forces overtime on their employees and will, sometimes, fudge the paperwork to not have to pay them the overtime or AT ALL. I've seen it happen.
I've also heard stories about people in distro centers that are not allowed to leave for up to 14 hours per day with only a 30min to 1 hour lunch all day.
I can see why you would laugh at the wage discrepancy but there is a lot more under the hood if you look :)

Are you talking about Walmart distribution centers? Every distribution center is like that. Kroger and Walmart pay their DC employees more because the work environment is SLAVERY compared to having a cushy job in the store.
some of that "horror" sounds like it could be violating labor laws.
you've been around long enough to know kroger will do underhanded stuff. for one that was huge news, look at the Ralph's division during the labor strike.
