So after having talked with one of the big guys upstairs I've basically been approved to move departments without having to deal with my FEM stopping me (she refuses to let anyone move departments without a lot of kicking and screaming basically). Though we have availability in a few different departments, but none in the ones I'm familiar with. Basically its overnight crew, meat/seafood, and produce. I heard from a friend that Drug/GM might be letting some people go, but it wasn't a sure thing.

I'm one of those people who ended up getting to know just about everyone in the store minus a few people that tend to be reclusive, so I would get along with most department heads and coworkers. Since basically I want anywhere that isn't the front end at this point. I'm half-ready to walk out if I have to stay much longer with all the problems up there. Which is a lot (from the witch hunt to find who's been leaving "stolen" food in the clock in room to watching a supervisor sell beer without an ID), and the scheduling problems aren't the half of it.

Basically, I just want to know which is the better departments to work for, and maybe what's a "typical" workload/day like.

Well, I work up at the front end as well, and I have no idea what it is like in other departments. People from other departments complain about working conditions and other **** as well. I hate working in the front end because the drama is just endless. Whenever I worked as a third-shift cashier, it was very peaceful. There were no store managers shoving things up your ass, no stupid QueVision **** to worry about, it was just so peaceful and a lot less drama. I have always wondered what it is like working in third shift grocery department.

Just a thought, third shift doesn't have any store managers or FES's to worry about. Don't really know what the grocery manager is like, though.

Produce.

 

It's still work, but it is easy work.  A lot of standing around if you have done your job.  Less heavy lifting compared to grocery.  Way fewer questions from customers because you stock a few hundred things while grocery stocks tens of thousands.  Enough people working in the department to have flexible hours.

 

Just be aware that if you choose produce, grocery, dairy, or drug/gm, you will be called up to cashier if it gets busy.  The only way around that is working something like pharmacy, deli, bakery, or meat.

 Basically the front end is punishment if you ever work in a different department. If you work in a different department you have a higher chance of becoming full time (albeit still a small chance), a higher chance of becoming a department backup, and a higher chance of getting to play chicken with the pallet jacks. All of which are important in your professional growth and development. :)
