Pretty sure my FEM is trying to force me out now...

12 hours *again* this week, despite the fact that I will have been there one year in a couple of weeks.
As I understand it, doesn't e-Sked work around seniority? Maybe I'm wrong with that one......

One of my co-workers, a younger worker, said that they're trying to 'punish' me because I keep complaining.
What the hell kind of company works like that/this?

Yea, I complain, I whine, but for something like that to happen?
And people get away with it?
How does a company like that stay in business and keep good employees?
Oh yea.....because the sheep keep coming to the pasture for 50 cents off of a can of creamed corn.
*sighs*

By the way, one of my FES, of whom I in on good terms, said claiming hours is called "rolling". Anyone else heard that term?
I'm sure I will get another 12 hours next week so I will be claiming hours this Friday.
I feel like a dick for even talking about it on here, but one can not live on $65 a week.

The only reason I have 30 this coming pay period is because last week I came in on my days off when asked and worked for others on other days.
But that has been a rarity.

I just can't believe a company that makes as much money as this one can allow the attempt to force someone out by giving them low hours.

I actually made an account to comment on this because its truly amazing. A younger co-worker told you that this is punishment and you just believed that without any actual evidence? After reading a good portion of your post maybe it is true. You are one of the few people I have ever seen on a forum that cant stop with the victim card. Its your life choices that got you here and its your actions that seemed to make you the constant victim. If its to the point where someone would try to force you out the damage is already done, pack up and move o n. But honestly at this point I don't think moving away from Kroger would change anything for you. You next job people will "try to force you out" or "punish" you.

It's entirely possible e-Sked is giving you more hours, but those hours are being "moved" to other courtesy clerks. If someone there that has control over the way the schedule is written (CSM, or ACSM if the ACSM is writing the schedule in place of the CSM, or a member of management) doesn't want you around much, then yeah, that person can be cutting your hours in the hopes that you will quit. It's possible.

Though, your availability versus those of others, number of people that are among the courtesy clerk classification and weekly budget all can and do play a role in determining how many hours you end up with.

Bottom line is this, really. Unless you're a department head (CSM, for example) or a lead (Lead Bookkeeper, for example), none of the jobs at Kroger are meant to be "lived" off of. The jobs can be "adequate" if you live with your parents, if you have a significant other that earns the primary income, if you live with friends and split expenses or if you're retired, but that's about it. Even making $14.50 as Lead Bookkeeper (in my division at least) isn't really easy to make work in an age where the cost of living has continued to outpace increases in hourly wages. CSMs have it a bit better, ranging from $15.00 to $18.00 on average, but that's still not easy to live off of if you're on your own and responsible for all expenses.

I love both of you. Let's get together at the Starbucks and gossip about the girl in the deli department.
Or would that be asking too much? I would hate to think you were "trying to force me out" and making me pay the bill for the coffee and cookies.

 1. Get my name right, you damn skank.

2. I really couldn't care less. I don't work for The Kroger Co. anymore. I've also picked on FES a number of times (and why he's not so receptive towards me) </3

3. It's hard to sympathize with someone when I have the opposite experience. My supervisor was also a college student, from the same university, mind you. My manager had a wife and two kids, hence he's more easy-going, and I've always been offered more hours than I needed (you can search the forum for those details).

So yeah..., FES, not to rub it in but.. your place sucks. :|

On another note, at least other people know about me!

*steals the spotlight*

In a more serious note, however, I'm so shady about anon people playing the psychiatrist game. Will you provide as your credentials first? No, diploma mills do NOT count (looking at you, U Phoenix).

I've already explained that. Clearly you can't read. People like you are the reason why abolishing mental health institutions were a bad idea.

If you don't like how the people respond to your presence here, then why are you hanging around here so much? Move on with your life.

I doubt you even work for Kroger. What a poser, you POS.

Speaking of mental institutions, have you considered anger management.

Maybe you and fes could go together.

You both have such quick tempers. And that is just on an Internet forum.I would hate to meet either of you in person.

Perhaps you can join us. With the amount of time you're spending here, you seem very interested.

And no, you totally don't work for Kroger. You've contributed NOTHING here, and all you've done are start false rumors about Kroger acquisition without backing it up.

How's that neck beard keeping you warm?

Although there is no way to prove it, I can assure you I do work for Kroger.
Why would I have come to this forum if I didn't.
The reason I'm on here so much is the sheer boredom of an Illinois winter. As I if I needed to explain myself to you.
As for your reasons for still being here, I could really not care less.
I'm just saying, since you don't work for Kroger anymore, move on.
As for not contributing anything, do you really think you are changing the world with your advice.
Kroger policies and procedures change so often and vary from division to division so your advice may be outdated and useless.
Go out and get a cat, get a hobby or just get on with life without Kroger.

Yea, I understand the 'not lived off' part. minimum wage sucks.
But for several weeks now I have had 12 hours, and I was under the impression that e-Sked went by seniority as part of its hour-dropping when they let the computer make the initial decisions. My current availability is *all* hours, well, midnight to 7 a.m. unavailable but everything else is there. So I've got seniority and a more-or-less open availability (until I can get that second job I'm working for at the moment) which to mean means something is starting to stink, and it's not the seafood that some idiot put in the gobacks cart two days ago.

Did you call off last week?  If you called off because the weather was bad, they may have avoided scheduling you when the weather is bad so they wouldn't need to worry about finding someone to cover your shift.

The way Kroger (or any union company for that matter) works it that they can do whatever they want, and then you can fight it with the union if you want.  Just because there is a union doesn't mean they always do what the union wants, it means that the union could help you later.  If you don't either talk to the union or claim someone's hours under you, then you can't do anything about it.

If you come in when you are called in or if you cover people's shifts, don't worry about how many hours you are scheduled.  I usually end up working about double what I was scheduled.  It allows me to choose if I want to work that day.

We've had people here who were customers of certain stores. Clearly you're new here.

Look, it's ok. We all like to make a great, tough first impression. Sadly, it doesn't fly if you're just posing the entire time. Obviously you've got nothing much to do if you're still sticking around.

I recommend switching from sandpaper when you wipe your ass. It'll make you less grumpy.

Let me get this straight - you've been reading the same posts from the same people who complain about the same thing over and over year after year but yet you actually log on, read the posts, for 2 years, then complain about it?  Seems you are the one having a problem with your life.  I know, it's winter, you're bored, but that's just really an excuse to log on here and pick a fight isn't it?  And my name is Ms. White.  You got it wrong.

That's not a "diagnosis" in any way at all.

Literally anyone with a computer could type up a preachy screed like that. A worthless endeavor by ivory tower liberals, pontificating about pet peeves and making idiotic generalizations based on a sample of three persons (and I'm not convinced any of those three actually exist, not that it matters). There used to be times when if you were going to "diagnose" someone it took a bit more than throwing a hyperlink up. No wonder nobody takes psychology seriously.

Well, guess how many hours I have again this next week?
Yep, 12.

This past week (as in, this week I'm writing this post) I got 20, but that was because I was asked to work an eight-hour day on Tuesday when they thought the weather would be bad.

I have no choice now but to go into the offices and confront HR or my FEM on these hours.
Twelve hours a week is no way to live.
I know Kroger will never pay its employees a living wage, nor is a courtesy clerk position expected to be one to live off of but how is it I have 12 hours when my one-year hire date comes up in about two weeks, and yet those courtesy clerks below me whom have been here less are getting 20 hours?

I know what will happen. They will bring up my complaining, my open statements to others about how I'm not always happy, how I'm trying to find work elsewhere.
But that shouldn't mean that I get 12 hours each week. If I have to bring up seniority, I will. If I have to "claim" hours of my fellow courtesy clerks, I'm going to do it.

It's time this bullcrap stopped. This makes three weeks in a row. To me, that's way too much of a coincidence to be an e-Sked issue.

You're probably right. It likely is too much of a coincidence to be an e-Sked issue.

However, you're never going to get the person that is deleting your hours to admit to it, because that will open himself/herself up to all sorts of potential problems. What you're planning on doing is possibly what he/she wants. This person could want you to confront him/her in the hopes you will say something that's considered inappropriate or write-up worthy. Or, this person may simply say, "if you don't like the hours you're getting, you're free to quit". Ultimately, you confronting this person will accomplish nothing, you know that right? You're better off just continuing to do what you've been doing as it's somewhat working to your benefit, until you hear about whether or not you have a job elsewhere.

If you must confront, get your union rep involved. If you have a halfway competent union rep, he/she will ensure the person you confront doesn't cross any lines and will be held accountable. Also too, your union rep can help ensure you don't say anything that could backfire on you. You're paying union dues... get the representation that you've paid for. Having your union rep there during this meeting can only help you, not hurt you.

I don't know if it is the HR person or the FEM who is making the schedule. I just know I keep getting 12 hours and have been there around a year while others who have been here less than me have 20 hours or more. And this has gone on for a few weeks now.

I am sure they are trying to force me out or give me lower hours due to my previous too-public complaining.
The only way the hours have *not* been 12 the past two pay periods is because last week I came in on my days off and on other days agreed to work for others.
Therefore I got nearly $200 this past pay scale after registering 30.5 hours.
The week prior I ended up getting around 24 hours.
The one week I only had 12 hours I got around $65 on my paycheck.

A person can not live on $65 a week. Especially when I have to support an elderly family member, buy groceries as a result, miscellaneous expenses, etc.
But I can not always depend on the fact that I will be called in for work, either. Sitting waiting for that last-minute phone call, or that phone call at 8:00 a.m., it's not a life.

I'm just not sure who to talk to about this or how to go about talking to them.
I may go direct to the store manager, as the Union coordinator -- the guy who comes down and tries to recruit new members -- told me that my Front End Manager is in the Union, so if I ever had a problem with her, I'd have to go to her boss, which is my store's manager. As in, the guy whose name is on all the bottom of the receipts.

But I don't know if she makes the schedule out or if our HR person does or what. So first I have to find that out.
But I think I will have no choice at this point but to go to our store manager and voice my concerns over my low hours.

If *anything* else, if the schedule goes by seniority, I should at *least* be getting 14 or more, heck 16 or more.
Yea we did just hire some new courtesy clerks but the schedule for this upcoming week that has me at 12 hours has them all unavailable because they don't start training until next week, after this upcoming week's schedule slash pay period.

It's just too much of a coincidence that I am getting the minimum hours weeks in a row.
It has to be human intervention.

But what do I argue on my behalf if they bring up my complaining and say that is why they are doing it or why it is being done?

As for the other job, I met with the Home Depot HR woman on Wednesday morning. She gave me paperwork for a drug test which was done that morning.
So we are waiting on the results (which will come back okay). Then she will call me up and tell me when to come in for orientation.

I'll go through a combination of paperwork and video training for orientation. That'll take about two days in total.
After that, it's officially on the schedule, although I will be training with another employee for at least a week.

The position at Home Depot will be Lot Attendant. The pay will be $8.75 an hour. The schedule will be created three weeks in advance.
Under good circumstances, if I get paid every two weeks, and pick up 20 hours a week, I could be looking at $200-$300 a paycheck.
More than I could ever get with Kroger.

The plan for me at the moment is to work for both companies until I can get a little more into the bank account.
My state refund for taxes came in; it's nearly spent thanks to groceries, but it helped a lot.
I'm waiting on an $850 or so refund on federal. If I can get that in, keep it steady and watch my spending, it's possible I can be on good enough financial ground between the two companies to tell Kroger to go to Hell by the end of April. That is my hope at least.

However, if it comes down to having to choose, I will choose Home Depot. They are offering higher pay, more stable scheduling and more understanding and respect as an employee.

I don't think complaining about the job warrants them ignoring union policy and scheduling outside of seniority. Their point should be moot.

And it would be your FEM doing the schedule, all department heads do the schedules.

That's the thing though -- as I understand it from this forum, they aren't ignoring union policy. I'm getting the minimum 12 hours. It's if they go underneath that number that I can bring the union into it. I did have that week about a month ago where I had 11 hours, but it seemed to be so trivial that I didn't bring it up with anyone. And as I remember, I ended up getting a few more hours added on by working on a day off or two that week.

If it's my FEM doing the schedule, it would be the bit_ch I have written about on here.
So it would not surprise me that she was purposely taking away my hours.
That is the kind of petty person she is at this store.
You do it her way or you are written up, spoken to, fired or something else.

The only ones that should be writing the front end schedules are the Customer Service Manager (CSM, who is also the department head of the front end) and Assistant Customer Service Manager (ACSM, who is the back-up department head). Management can write the schedule, but only in instances where both the CSM and ACSM are both on LOA or one is on a LOA and the other, for whatever reason, is unable to write the schedule (a rare, rare, instance).

Since having a union rep with you isn't an option, I'd at least try and get the store manager to be a part of the discussion.

FES, I'd say just find out what hour/shift claiming you can do and start doing it every week. Your complaining and whatever else doesn't give them the right to schedule you below your seniority. And any/all changes to shifts are recorded in the audit log in eschedule, so if you can get someone in mgmt interested enough, they can find out if your shifts are being cut, and if so, by whom. They can also check to make sure you're not set for a max of 12 or so hours.

 God, I hate broken records.

So I work tomorrow and plan to start asking questions about my hours.
Hopefully starting with the store manager, since the HR lady and my FEM are pretty close.
