My coworker told me I made a mistake not joining the union. Ideas?

Tell your coworker that he/she made a mistake in joining the union.

Since you had the option of not joining, I'm assuming you're in a right-to-work state. You get the same rights/benefits as union members, just short of representation during duress (which, honestly, unless you're an ass is something that you wouldn't need) whether you sign up or not. I applaud you for not signing up with the greedy turds, however.

Besides, the union will find ways to chip your paycheck little by little, and they make it hard for you to leave. Would you really want that?

I don't know about the area the OP works in, but in my area if you're not in the union, you get nothing, and at the mercy of being fired for any reason.

That's pretty much a state-by-state thing. Like here in TN, we're a right-to-work state, so I'm not a union member, but I get like 97% of the benefits Union members get, but without having to pay ransom- I mean dues.

I'm pretty sure the only thing you don't get is the ability to vote. Store management in my store at least doesn't know who is or isn't union, so they always call the steward to the manager's office anytime they give out a CA.

It depends. Alot of people on here make good points on both sides. If Kroger is just a stepping stone job until you finish school or something then maybe skip joining the union. However, if this is your career, the union comes in handy when you are mistreated by management or cheated out of your correct pay, etc. In a perfect world unions wouldn't be necessary but in a typical store environment rife with conflict and clashing personalities, you might want the union behind you. Do the dues feel like ransom sometimes? Yes. Does it seem like the union protects asses and ****ty employees sometimes? Yes. But, also, do they help out with legitmate issues that you may face during your time at Kroger? Also, yes. So, to me it isn't a mistake But, it's up to you to calculate whether joining the union is worth it. To be honest I go back and forth in my opinion on the union but overall I think it's a good thing

Probably the best, most objective and honest description I've seen.

It's not obviously right or obviously wrong; it's a judgement call.

most of the union reps either have worked in the business and have been around for awhile most of them know all the store managers so don't think you can't be fired for no reason.... plenty of times I have had a union rep ask is so and so worth keeping.  Also if  they really want you gone they will make it happen and no one can save you lol. the union is a joke now and is trying to hold on to what they can just wait till you start getting more taken out of your checks to keep the pension scam going
