Let me tell you about my Easter Sunday!

Well my Easter Sunday was fun.  I was scheduled to do chicken from 9:30-6.  The opener from 7-2:30 and the second in from 8-2:30.  Now for the closers, a new hire for his first day from 1:30-9, and last guy from 2:30-10.  The new hire was a no-call, no show.  And the last guy called in.  When the manager on duty called to tell him he couldn't call in he wouldn't answer the phone.  In the deli we have two on vacation, two who requested and got the day off.

Instead of trying to call someone in the co-manager on duty asked how late any of us could stay over.  Of the 3 of us who showed up, 2 of us had children and plans with them for Easter, and the new guy who came in had to leave at his scheduled time because that was when he could get a ride home.  She was upset that we closed it at 3.  Hey I had to clean all the chicken stuff and the deli stuff, so if she wasn't going to get us any help, closing at 3 it had to be.

It was suggested that we could get a cashier from the front to close the deli, but that didn't happen.  We only had 4 cashiers all day.  One got sent home for wearing jeans, and another wasn't allowed to come back to work until she got a full release from her doctor, though she had worked all last week before they said anything.  With so few cashiers and baggers, breaks and lunches were very late.  But the co-manager sure as hell went out to lunch on time.

A cashier got sent home for wearing jeans? At my store, our dress code is jeans & our Kroger shirt & apron.

Yeah it's pretty crazy, re that part about no calls/no shows.......we're seeing it happen more and more with new hires. That, and always hearing em 'y'all don't pay me enough for THIS $hit.' Well, I have two questions:

If you didn't plan to come in, why'd your monkey azz apply??

And just how much do you think a minimum skilled, uneducated retail job should pay? CHEE-zus.

If there is one universal truth across all of Kroger, it's that delis are a trainwreck.

All departments require a lot of work, but there's just something extra special about deli. If I were a new kid making $7.35 in our deli, I'd no call/no show too. Screw that noise. Especially when you have produce across the way putting out their product, barely breaking a sweat, for the same wage.

To be honest, deli should be getting paid more for half the bull**** they go through on a regular basis.

And getting sent home for jeans? I know it's a religious holiday, but JFC, that has been the dress code for us.

I'll say this and move on, because I actually both respect and enjoy most of your posts/opinions.

My point was and is, you can find a way to justify fking off on any job for ANY reason. And the dick weeds I'm referring to would pitch fits and use the same excuses even if they were getting that McWage of $15./hr.

Hey, work sucks for every body. Don't wanna do it? STAY HOME.

Yeah, it would be nice if there were a higher pay for deli... but it'll never happen.

What would be really nice is if when our store hires a new batch of people, they toss us one or two with an IQ over 70.

I don't get the jeans thing either.  You're short staffed on a holiday, and you're sending people home?  Yeah, that makes sense.

Other than that... I take delight in that a store's deli had to close at 3pm on a Sunday, let alone Easter Sunday.

That's when you know your department is really f#$ked, Krogerman. Hopefully some steps will be taken to help the situation.

Of course we both know how quickly that happens.

Oh.. It's cool.

I suppose I was just talking about deli in general, and how it really is a crap job for the same pay as other departments. (Edit I'm also referring to how dysfuntional my deli is that I work in)  I get your point entirely, and agree with it.  Our store has entirely too many people dicking around... and I'll be the first person to be a hardass to call them out on it.

It'd be nice if they hired more at our store period.  I've been 3rd to last on the seniority list for pretty much my entire stay here thus far.  They hired 5 after me, and only 2 has stayed.

We're going to be even more screwed when another person leaves next month.  They don't want to schedule more than 5 people a day and then they get all pissy when **** don't get done.  Hmmm...there is a solution to that problem I wonder...

lol yeah that's a management failure right there.  Do a verbal and move on. "needs of the business" means you need people at work but that's just me.

In my store we have to wear the ugly dark blue shirt and khaki style pants,  but from what I've hear the cashier in question made a habit of calling off and coming in late.

I was working the service desk and closing. If I received a dollar for every time the phone rang and it was a call asking what our hours were or how long customer service is open, I probably wouldn't have to work for like a whole month.

Huh, by the time I went in yesterday at 3:30 it was D.E.A.D. inside. The morning was hectic for both bakery and deli from what i heard, but i had a nice relaxing night where people actually stayed home. After the record breaking sales week we had last week, I was glad.

I've been wearing blue jeans for the past year now. Nothing was mentioned about them until recently, but I told them that I couldn't find them in my particular size. If they make "stink" over it i'll get the black jeans, but I can tell you they'll be reimbursing me for half the cost since they're more expensive for me. $50 / pair which is why they probably haven't make stink over it.

Working Easter is always relatively easy. It's just the inconvenience (or in some of our cases... convenience) of being away from our families.

Sunday was a fzcking nightmare. We did over 488k in sales last week with a peak of 98k on Sunday while only having a budget of 75k. I was the only bagger after 8pm and didn't get anything done. No trash. No carts. No Go backs. Nothing. I wasn't even able to get off the register.

Talk about failing to predict. That leads to understaffing.
