So my deli department has had only 5 new hires since I've been there, and only 2 remain.  I just found out that one of them may be leaving in a couple of months.  This is on top of someone else leaving in a month, and one person severely limiting her hours (she's only available 3 days a week now).  And I'm considering a move myself since at this point, I'd make more money doing odd gigs than I do at Kroger, and with my second job giving me triple the hours Kroger gives, I don't really need Kroger and the bull**** they pull anymore.  Only reason why I haven't quit yet is because I'm too nice for my own good and don't want to leave them up a creek.  Not that they give a damn--can't even call out without someone getting pissy about it.

 

What would it have to take before they push to hire people into that department? Will most of the "regular closers" have to quit and force the higher ups on the seniority list to *gasp* close the deli (since they like to bitch about closers not getting everything done--hard to when they got day shift's mess to clean up, just saying)? Right now it's looking grim as hell.

What is it with senior deli employees? (Excluding 4hourrush and krogerman77) They seem to think that it's morning crew vs evening crew when you're supposed to be one damned team. I don't think any store-level department has a worse reputation across all Kroger than the deli.

I wish I knew. When I took this position, I knew that it was going to be demanding and catty. But I didn't think it was gonna be that catty. Estrogen overload will do that I guess.

 

I will say though, because it's so catty with a bunch of females wanting to cut someone on a slicer, there's never a dull moment in the deii.

 I'm not deli, I'm bakery. We beat deli last week in sales a couple days ;D *acts all snooty about it*

Just kidding with you there but seriously, I really don't get it. I like that since we got a new department head, my department has been a team. The last bakery manager would not let anyone work together on anything, now our sales are up 20% in the last period.

Our department head of deli is an old lady who used to be in the military and she snaps orders at everyone, yet she doesn't know anything about running the deli. She yells at you and then realizes she made a mistake and then she acts all sheepish about it (but do you ever get an apology? No.) She also yells at you about new policies she just implemented (because "the people upstairs told me to!" uh huh..). She doesn't tell anyone about these new policies, you're just expected to know and if you don't follow it, she gets mad. She's so unpleasant to work with and people have been quitting left and right. Our new hires leave after 5 days, seriously, we haven't been able to hang onto anyone new for at least 4 months.

 just thought I'd like to point out that I am female, so yes, I know all about estrogen overload.

 

I would be a delight to work with if Kroger didn't suck my soul out of me.  At this point I just don't give a damn.

It was always mornings vs. evenings when I was over Perishables in every department, but Deli was the worst. You'd think that without the night shift, the deli wouldn't exist, and according to the day shift, the night shift was all lazy ****s. The truth, which always lies somewhere in the middle, is that both are lazy.

Personally, my biggest gripe is that when day shift messes up the pans and dishes, they just leave them there, saying that they had no time. I've worked mornings a couple of times, so I know that they can get busy on certain days (Sundays and maybe Mondays, for example). But they have at least one more than the closers, and they know that there are only two closers, so if anything, they should at least clean up their dishes and not leave 99 of them for the next bozo to come clean it up. Mornings rarely get customers before lunchtime, so I'm sure they can do at least their dishes before they leave.

Closers get afterschool rush and dinner rush, which is rough because heaven forbid if we make chickens by the book (like not make extra chickens) and we run out, we have to rush to put another 6 in there so they don't run to management and cry about whole chickens not being available before 7pm. Thus putting us behind further. We do what we can with what little time we have. Especially when they get all snippy about overtime.

An extra person for closing would work us. But since no new hires/new hires quitting, there's not much that can be done. Deli is the most frustrating place on earth. And I live with a preschooler. That says a lot.

 From what I see in my department (produce) and the deli day crew goes running for the time clock on time and us closers better pick up the slack.  Or its a but chewing in the morning with threats of write ups and no one shops in the store in the evenings so we must be standing around.  The sales sheets say otherwise, (when is prime time) but it don't matter.  We are short people and management solution to new hires quitting is not hiring.  OT is nice on the paycheck, but thats about it.

 What OT?  They yell at us "NO OT!" when we ask to stay later to not get our asses chewed up in the morning.

Welcome to Kroger. My division had a 70% turn over rate in the first year.

People quit because of the pay or managers no longer willing to work with their availability.

So uhh...small update.

We lost another one. Apparently walked out and never came back. I'm honestly not surprised since the last time I worked with her, she was very much at her wit's end. Between the scheduling ****-up (which is also why I ended up with less than 12 hours this week--incompetent schedule writer) and management refusing overtime (thus reducing productivity and thus causing closers to get **** on because not everything can be done in the short shifts they have), I'm shocked she didn't do it sooner.

Soooo...essentially we'll be down to 9 in our department by the end of June (8 if I decide to leave). Let's see how they handle that.
