Have any of you ever had a customer that was on a cellphone talk about you negatively to the person on the other end of the line right in front of you?
If so, how did you handle it, and how should I handle it next time it happens?
No, but I believe being on your cell phone in public all the time looks ridiculous and rude. People think they look so cool and cannot go 5 minutes without talking or texting to friends. Technology has consumed people.
Yes. I did everything I could to stop myself from hitting the woman in the face. Just keep calm, remember that you won't see them the rest of the day if you're lucky, and take a deep breath. Usually this works for me.. But it may not work for you.
I have a simple philosophy: If a customer is being a douchey ass, I'll just be passive aggressive. What do I mean? Bag their items really terribly. If they're already talking bad about you, their opinion won't change. So if a bag happens to break as they're walking to their home from their car, oops. Couldn't be helped. I also won't offer them their Catalina Coupons, ask about their Rewards card, or any other coupons. I'll just inconvenience them as much as possible.
Usually, on top of that, the next customer in line who witnesses it will join in and **** talk the previous customer, which always makes you feel better because you technically can't do it in the checkstand in front of other customers, and they know it. That doesn't stop the other customer from doing so however. So usually I'll go out of my way to help out the other customer who saw what happened and talks **** about the previous customer. I'll straight up tell them about Coupons we have, go out of my way to "make it right" on anything they have questions about price-wise.
I've never had anyone talk badly about me on the cellphone, but I can't stand it when customers walk up to the deli counter on their phone. Then I say "how can I help you?" and they give me the stink eye for not letting them stand there and finish their conversation. Oh, I'm sorry I was so rude! And here I thought you wanted service. In reality, they just want to hold their place in line while they have their conversation and they don't care if they hold other customers up.
my favorite is when people come to the seafood or meat counter on their phone they don't know what they want then they give you the phone and want you to talk to the person they are talking to because they both don't know what they want.

Basically, they get what they give.
Oh my. You just have to keep that negative energy flowing. What goes around comes around and you are keeping yourself in that vicious cycle. Blame yourself from now on.
If a customer walks up to the counter and they're on a cell phone, I ignore them. I've actually had people try to make a call while I was waiting them. I'll just keep asking them questions and keep interupting them.
Ask them if they would like to wait for another employee to help them since you are obviously so inept. Seriously, I don't think we should have to wait on people who are on their phones as they are just slowing down the process. We could be waiting on a customer who is actually giving their full attention to you.

Karma is just a silly concept, doesn't exist. People get what they give when it comes to me. If people are nice, I'll be nice and polite in return. If they're assy, I'll be as assy as I can be without it coming off as obvious and getting me in trouble. Just because they're a customer doesn't entitle them to being asses to people.
i have had customers in the deli line hold up other customers by asking the person they are on the phone with what they want. also, i have had a customer that was shopping with her mother and they thought i gave them the wrong meat (which i didn't!) but anyways, they were talking about me so i just tossed her order up on the counter and walked off. ha ha

I think when some people are on their cell phones they think they're in their own private world and the rest of the world can't see or hear them. It's like when someone picks their nose in their car and they think no one can see them.
