Dumbest theft attempt I've seen
Permalink

Right, so today is Sunday, and I was the opening Self-checkout person. It got slightly busy, but I was still able to keep up with every customer who went through, and I only had to call our opening cashier up to the front to check someone out once, for someone who had a large order.

At around 8am, a "customer" asked one of the employees if someone could open up a register so he could get a candy bar, since he didn't want to use self-checkout. She looked in his basket, and he had over $200 worth of packaged meat in our plastic bags, which she questioned him about. He said he went through self-checkout to buy it and must have forgotten the receipt there. She called him out on it, because there's no way someone would willingly go through self-checkout to buy all of that meat, but demand a cashier for one candy bar.

The best part? That wasn't even the biggest giveaway. He had a case of beer in the bottom of his basket that he claimed he bought at the same time as the meat. We're in Texas, and Texas state law is that alcohol can't be sold until 12pm on Sundays. He continued trying to argue with her because he didn't seem to get how obvious his theft attempt was, but quickly left as soon as she said "Our cameras catch everything" to which he responded by saying "Let me just go to my truck real quick since my wife's out there." Sure enough, his wife was pulled up right in front of the store, ready for him to get in so they could quickly get away. You know, right up by our store, in clear sight of our store's security cameras outside.

I've seen a lot of theft attempts throughout the time I've been working at Kroger, but this one takes the cake by far.

Woah woah really?! All of the stores around my area have people buying beer like at 9AM. Once we had one of those undercover guys try to buy alcohol as a minor. We passed those, but the sale was refused for all other reasons except for the time of day.

Is it a state law or a county law?  Where I'm from, alcohol sales are regulated by county.  That's why you have wet counties and dry counties.

I think it used to be a federal law.  Search "Blue laws" online.

OP here. It's a state law, not a county law. Any time we get a customer from out of state who complains about it, they always say "I'll just go to another city and buy it then" and we all just kind of laugh because no city in Texas can sell alcohol before 12pm on Sunday.

Anyways, it turns out the theft attempt that happened is something that's happened to a lot of Kroger stores in the area I live. We just happen to be the first store to have caught one of these people doing this same scam. Our Store manager went through all the security footage and watched every move he made, and also printed out a picture of the guy from the security camera, I'm assuming to fax it to all of the other stores.

OP stated it was 12pm on Sundays, not every day.  You can buy alcohol as early as 7 am any day but Sunday.

I know what OP said. And I'm saying that on that very day (Sunday), people here buy alcohol whenever the stores would open like as if it were a regular day.

In my state no one can buy alcohol outside of a bar or restaurant (And there are never bars open on a Sunday). So when someone comes in on a Sunday wanting alcohol, they're sh*t out of luck.

If he was going to steal **** why would he go through a register? It makes no sense...

I guess he thought if he made himself conspicuous, people wouldn't suspect him of anything. He also probably realized that I was right there at self-checkout, by the only open door, keeping an eye out the whole time, and there is no way to sneak past me. Either way though, it was really dumb of him. So far everyone in my store that I've told about it has cracked up laughing.

At my store they have LaneHAWK which uses a camera to detect BoB, the secondary purpose is to ensure that carts don't lock up on the front door, if you dont pass thru self check or a register your cart locks up and than the security guard and the off duty cop can nab you.

I not sure if your familiar with Phoenix but our store is in one of the bad neighborhoods. The security is all right but the off dutys are where it is at. They stand at the front door with their uniforms on and there is a notable reduction in theft.
