On the first day of the job, what am I to expect? Also, are you given a set list of things to do or do they expect you to just do things when you feel they need done?

What department? We can't really help you if we have no idea where you're working.

On your first day you'll be doing computer training,
on the second day - computer training,
on the third day - finishing up computer training then sent to the floor.

Once there you'll be given an instructor for about 15-30mins who will quickly go over your responsibilities(leaving lots of things out) and what will be expected of you... then they will throw you to the wolves and wish you "best of luck".

If you have any questions ask the people around you and hope that they know the answer.

If you're in a department and no one around you knows what you need to be doing ask a manager or your department head.

If it was anything like me, the first day you'll be doing just plain work. And then about two years later someone will realize you were supposed to take some training modules and then make you do all of them in addition to the new ones you'll need for whatever promotions you get, so you'll just have an entire week where you do nothing but sit at a computer clicking "next."

You probably won't see this but, how did your first day go?
