got promoted to frozen lead from overnight stocker. my kroger cant keep employees due to low pay and disrespect from management. They tell me to "own" my dept. and run it tight and turn it around from the mess the last lead left it. I only have one employee and every damn day one of us gets pulled to another dept to do someone elses work. I cant throw all my live some days and damn sure cant get back stock done because of this. what can I do? they want me to stay late but make me leave early at the end of the week so i dont get overtime. Can I say "NO" when they pull me to other depts? Can i say "NO" to leaving early? *Kroger mid atlantic division*

You need to decide if the extra money is worth it.  I doubt you can stay if they say clock out.  Kroger will expect you do get the job done no matter what other work they pile up on you.  It's just the way Kroger is and it's only getting worse.  Department Lead will look good on your resume, update it and see what else is out there.

What other departments keep calling you?  You shouldn't be working in any other department unless it's a call for help on the front end.  As far as leaving early at the end of the week to avoid overtime goes, you might want to check with the union and see what your contract says.  I would think if you were scheduled to work 8 hours the last day of the work week, then you should be able to  work the full day regardless of whether you've had to stay over earlier in the week.  If you can't do that, then I would stop staying over.  They're cheating you out of overtime.  Personally, I think you and your help should both leave and let the department go to hell.   Mangement would then have to explain to corporate why they can't keep employees.

Shop steward says I do not have to leave early and that once a schedule is posted I am allowed to work the hours I am posted to work. He says if I dont want to leave early then I do not have to. but management tells me I have to leave early. This is my store in a nutshell. everyone contradicting each other and it all coming down on me.

Show them the contract and grieve it if you have to.  Our contract is anything over 8 hours PER DAY is overtime.

You could possibly file a grievance for the hours that were scheduled and they made you leave early.

Yes, you can say no to leaving early. That is a request on their part, not a demand. If they try to tell you otherwise, file a grievance. As to you both getting called into other departments, my question is this, are you 3rd shift? All of the frozen food has now shifted over to 3rd shift here, but used to be day time several years ago. So, the only other department you should be getting called to is grocery, which shouldn't be the case unless you can actually spare the hours. Regardless, tell them that unless you're given the hours, at minimum, that ELMS allows, things cannot change. With 2 people it can be difficult to schedule accordingly. I'm in the same boat and often times I only need 4 hours of help one day and 4 hours on another, but since they are full time, they are either there or they are not, there's no middle ground. Because of this, there is one truck night a week where I am alone(if he is working on display change day), and sometimes need to stay over an hour to get finished. Store manager understands this and doesn't say anything.

Also, anything over 8 hours is overtime(I would assume with every contract), I think what they are meaning is that you don't go over your total scheduled hours, even if some of them are OT.

I wouldn't go and help another dept just because the "they say so" (meaning the other dept head) if store management says go and help, then help you shall. However, I'm not sure if they can make you leave early from your shift. I'd check with management. Sometimes management don't give a rats ass what the contract says. It's my way or the highway,"

Your shop steward told you that you do not have to leave and can work your scheduled shift. Hold him to it and when your management asks you to leave tell them to take it up with the union. "I'm staying to get my department looking good. Just like you told me that you wanted. OT is not my concern. Go talk to our Union Rep."

I run a produce department and the front end constantly tries paging me and all of my employees to check. Nonstop, all day long. I finally went off on the front end manager who keeps threatening to write my employees up and told them to get their **** together. The scheduling is so poorly done and they can't seem to call anyone else.My dept does almost 15k a day and you don't keep that kind of quality produce and freshness by constantly abandoning the dept. Rant over! :D

Since when does Front Manager have write up powers? I find that laughable. Did store manager give FE sole authority to write them up? They might be bluffing just to keep your guys up where they want them.

In ATL division over 9 hrs is OT.  They can't require you to stay and then tell you to cut OT.  You worked it, under contract you're still entitled to work your scheduled shift too.  I'm happy to cut time because I want the hell out of Kroger and usually OT pay isn't worth it unless it's several hours since I'm no where near top pay.

No, they hold no power over any of my employees and that's why I essentially told them to F off and run their front end properly. :D

Lol. Good call. Because it's not them
That's going to get in trouble for not getting work done. It's you and your employees that will get stung.
