Talking to customers
Permalink

I am a very quiet person. I have been working since January and I am just now getting use to saying Good morning or whatever to a customer when they walk past me. Today they told me that I need to interact with the customers more. That I need to ask them how they are and if I can help them with anything. Is anyone else like this? How do you overcome being so nervous and speaking to the customers more?

I was the same way, but for me it was because I was new and didn't think I could actually help them since I had no idea where anything was at the time. The more you learn, the easier it will be to be personable. Just keep a few stock phrases to greet customers and use those. You'll get over it soon enough. It's not so bad.

Most of the kuntomers I deal with are two legged douche nozzles; the most selfish, drama monster--it's all about ME--over grown three year olds only a sadist based evolutionary process could create. Soooo, when going about my store I go to Herculean lengths to avert eye contact. I fake cell phone calls. I'll point and wave at an imaginary person behind my accoster, and I'll double my already track star fast walk just to out distance these human sani--wipes. When all that doesn't work? And I simply MUST interact with the kuntomer?

¨Hi! I'm ---------, how may I help ya today?'' Friendliest affect you've ever seen. It's not hard when you don't care.

Tbh im the same way but you wouldnt even know it.  Im on front end. I supervise, service desk, self check, cashier and bag. Im most talkative at the service desk.

When Im cashiering, I try to ring their groceries up as fast as I can to avoid talking to them. It depends on the customer though.  If theyre talking about something i could careless about, I get them in and out of my line 1 and half , 2 minutes tops depending on the size of the cart.

Im most talkative at self check and service desk mainly because my favorite customers will come see me when Im not busy and chat for a while .

I really dont have any advice though sorry.  All I can say is start off by simply saying "Hey how are you?" They reply "I'm doing good, fine, great" I never ask if I can help them with anything unless it looks they are looking for something. Other than that, I just keep it simple with a smile. If they want to talk they will continue the conversation.

I work in the meat and seafood department, so I try to spend most of my time behind the counter, or in the cutting room or cooler.

When I'm behind the counter, if anyone gets close to the counter, I just say "Hey how are you, what can I get for you?" or "Need help with anything?".

When I am out on the floor, I simply make eye contact and nod, most people are fine with that. Maybe I'll do the occasional "Hi how are you?" but I usually keep walking before waiting for an answer.

The easiest way to start is to simply say "Thank you for shopping at Kroger" when you see folks heading to the parking lot with their filled cart. The reason that's easy is because there's no follow on expected. They may say "sure" or "thanks" but that's about it.

If I'm at the counter, I would say hi.

If I'm not anywhere near it, I keep my head down.

I have really bad anxiety, and retail's a horrible place for me to be as it is. So if I didn't have to be social, I avoided it. And no, it didn't get any better for me. It actually got worse, because I was essentially forced.

Just ask if they're finding everything ok and smile. Nobody gets into deep conversation when they go to a grocery store unless they know you or are trying to reminisce about their "first job" bagging groceries/filling shelves. Hell some people may know something that you don't, like if a school is about to come in and buy up all the Juicy Juice.

Im a CC and they have not given me too much **** about it. I try to make a point not to say have a great day unless the cashier doesnt. I will acknowledge them but I figure by the time they get out the store they only heard that about 7 times..
