Well today I've just been laid off from my job after working for almost two years at my local Kroger. The reason for this is because I had a family cruise with my relatives between June 3-9 and I had to take the time off at work but apparently I didn't do something right. I went to the e-schedule and requested the time off with the words "family cruise vacation" in each of the days comment sections and put it in for two weeks so I could work the beginning of one week and the 2nd half of the next. In addition to scheduling online I told at least two managers (as I can remember) about the time off and left a big note on the desk near the schedule sheet so that whoever did my schedule would be reminded. Arriving back on June 10th I was told by one of the managers that someone threw my note away with a bunch of other things near the schedule board and that some how my managers I worked with didn't know about my vacation being off between June 6-9th along with the week before which included me being off June 3-5th. It's kinda complicated I know but I was told by one of my managers (while I was being told about being laid of) that I could settle for a grievance which would get me working again. I just want to know how long before I can work again because the manager who told me I was laid off said it would be around 2 months and someone else told me it would be like 2 weeks. Any knowledge about this issue would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
Apply at another retail store. The job with Kroger is gone unless the union can win a grievance. File a grievance thru the union anyway. You paid the dues, use that resource. But it sounds like the grievance already failed. Meijers will promote you faster if you are a go getter.
Always make a copy of notes. One for you and one for person getting it. Unfortunately, eschedule requests are just that. A request. Some managers will work with you. Others don't give a rats ass about time off. They can deny it for "needs of the business". Your managers should have communicated this to you.
Most likely, you will be labeled as "do not rehire" in the Kroger system. Why would you want to go back and start all over from day 1? You would almost need to apply at a different Kroger. If you are going to make a move in any job, always try to make moves up, not backwards.
There is no definite time range. A schedule grievance could be settled in a day. I knew someone that won an attendance grievance and came back to work 8 months later. I know someone that won a grievance very similar to yours and was back to work after 2 months and he got 2 months backpay. Speak with your union rep. File a grievance and see where it goes.

So basically what your manager is telling you is that someone screwed up and YOU WILL pay the price for THEIR screw up. Fight it. File grievance. Hopefully that will get you off your "lay off" (termination?) and back to work. Did you make a copy of your vacation schedule? If so use that to file a grievance as well. That way you have proof and managers have zip. Good luck
That's exactly how the majority of e-schedule requests (availability and off) I've made have been (mis)handled: just ignored, not acknowledged, never picked up and addressed one way or the other.
You made every effort to comply. Fight them long, hard, and often.
This really bugs me and let's replace laid off with you were fired for not showing up. There's no reason for you to be fired over this, you did everything you could other than tattoo your note on someone arm. And you better fight for you job back or you will be part of the problem with Kroger employees not standing up for their rights.
