Continue with my job? Or two weeks notice?

Where to start...

Kroger has given me the opportunity to learn many useful skills and life experiences...  I have done many foolish things while employed here, such as multiple no call-no shows and the like... so, management should have a little frustration with me.  There's no justification for my behavior, yet there were some problems Kroger never considered on my part...

I am a full-time college student.  In the fall, I will be taking 6 classes, which is a little ridiculous.... not to brag on my part.  I know people generally say that Kroger is flexible with hours, but I'm in the Meat Department which is extremely low on help.  I hate to tell them, but I will not be able to work with  them once August comes. No more 40 hour weeks for 8.20.  No 16 hour weeks either.  I see jobs for 12 an hour, no weekends, 8-25 hrs/ wk,  which are more to my liking. :)

Maybe it is more unfortunate for me since I will obviously not have a paycheck, but to me, and my family, it is much more important to go to school than go to work at a retail grocery store that barely pays minimum wage..

I was wondering how I should go about giving a two week's notice.... Is this the right thing to do?  I am not looking for correct answers.  If I was just foolish for my mistskes,  I would like for you to tell me, because I have had many of them.

Thank you very much.

Hey there,

I was almost in the EXACT same position. I work in the Meat Department, and am full time in college also. I'll be taking 5 classes in the fall, but I'm also taking 2 right now during the summer.

I turned in my 2 weeks notice, 3 days ago. The $7.45/hr isn't worth it.

Don't know how you were lucky enough to make over $8!

The next time you see your store manager preferably, tell them that you'll be giving your 2 weeks and hand him a paper that thanks them for the employment and gives notice of resignation. Just tell him you won't have time for the needs of the business when school starts getting more intense. You'll be able to leave on favorable terms that won't burn any bridges by doing so. Also tell your market manager so they know as soon as possible as well. Good luck with school

Thanks for the replies.

So I hand in the notice to the store manager?

I am taking 3 classes this summer, all online, and I am not quite sure how I am balancing that with 37-40 hours at Kroger each week...

I see other people who are full-time students, full-time workers, and parents, and am completely surprised by their ability to get stuff done!

Yes, $8.20 an hour.   One week, I looked on my paycheck and noticed that my payrate jumped from minimum wage.  I don't think they explained the pay raises correctly to me, but they come so slowly, so it just isn't worth it to me.

You know... they (Kroger management) say that there are many opportunities here at Kroger, but I just don't see it, unless you want to stay there your entire life...

I would really like to have weekends off.  I know it is not possible working in retail, but I don't really have a social life as it is, so missing out on family functions and the like has been constant for me.

That's another reason I quit. I never have time to see my friends. I missed my dad's birthday, my mom's birthday, mother's day, AND father's day, all because of Kroger.

Yes, hand it to your store manager.   There are opportunities at Kroger, but they aren't for everybody.    If guaranteed weekends off are necessary, then retail work really isn't for you.

Okay, thanks.

No... retail is not really for me... I have thin patience with people as it is.... and the Kroger mantra of "Customer comes first" or any minimally revised version of that, simply does not sit well with me....

Oh... I am happy that this job taught me some "people skills" however.

Serving people... assisting people... even in a completely mundane way...

It's just so exhausting to me...

I do not need EVERY weekend off, but when I request it for a relatively important event, well, I expect to have it off.

That may seem like an entitlement perspective to you.  But this Saturday, my Dad's family will be holding a picnic.  This will be my grandfather's birthday, who would be turning 95, and this is one day before my father passed away 4 years ago.  I also have not seen my Dad's side of the family in quite awhile.  The request, however, was declined.

I NEVER request Saturday's or Sunday's off.  I have requested other days off because I needed to do things for school.  Interestingly, the new guy is off on Saturday, so I will hopefully persuade him to switch days or something instead of just not going in....

I really do not care about burning bridges to Kroger.  I simply do not want a negative reference in the future.

You can always heavily restrict your schedule. If they refuse to work with you then you can quit. Having both money and school is pretty great but the cons can outweigh the pros at that point.

I feel like a problem you're having is because you're working in meat department. People with school, work part time, or have other obligations should be placed into a more easily shiftable position like cashier or bagger. Other departments usually do not have enough staff to cover when people take off. At least in our store, meat department is nearly all full time. So if anyone requests a day off, somebody is going to have to get overtime which you know they don't want.  The same applies to most other departments except front end.

The problem with heavily restricting is that the OP may end up with no hours, which means no money and he might as well quit anyways.

Understaffing is a problem in all departments but front end.  That's why they'll throw anyone in and hope for the best.

If you still really need the money, you could try talking to your manager.  Tell him that you need to request off sometimes, so you need to work in either the front end or possibly produce AND they need to work with you.  If they say no, hand in your 2 weeks right there.  If they say yes, see if they work with your schedule, if not, give your 2 weeks.

Depending on your store, you might be able to transfer to produce. I work the front end at my store, and a lot of us college students transition pretty well from front end to produce with our schedules. But I work at a rather large store so the produce department is large enough to have more people on staff than at other stores. Drug GM is also another department that has a decent number of college students.

You'll have to weight the pros and cons, but you could look at on-campus employment. I worked in Housing and Residence Life while doing teaching internships and it worked out wonderfully because while I worked where I lived, I didn't have to commute and the college is very much "Classes before Work" minded.
