Working at Kroger for a first job?

Hey everyone

I am 16 and applied to work at Kroger. If I get hired, what can I expect? How can I be a good worker and get promoted/raises?

I want to work hard so they see I am a good worker.

Show up on time.  Do what you are told and do it well but quickly too.  Don't goof off.  Don't be a brown noser.  Don't be a tattletale.  At 16, there's really no room for advancement.  Most, if not all, other departments other than the front end require you to be 18 to work in them.  When it comes to raises, that's all dependent upon your contract.  Baggers usually only get one raise because they're expected to become clerks when they turn 18.  Clerks get raises every 6 months until they reach top pay, but that's dependent upon your contract. Also, full time employees get paid more than part time employees for the same amount of service  If you are hired, find out who your union steward is at your store and ask for a copy of the contract book.

Now, when it comes to doing your job, be sure to acknowledge the customer by either saying hello or asking how they are are smiling and making eye contact.  Don't carry on a conversation with a friend or another employee while you're bagging a customer's order.  Ask the customer if they need help out and be sure to say thank you.

One thing I can't stand is when courtesy clerks stand around talking to other employees instead of working.  There is always plenty of work to do so keep busy and keep talk to a minimum.  I'm not saying you will do this, but other employees will.  Just keep it to a minimum.  It's a pet peeve of mine and floor supervisors and managers as well.  If you want to talk to another employee near you, you can both be cleaning, stocking bags etc. while you talk.  Have fun and try to enjoy yourself!

If you can show up on time in uniform with a name tag on and a good attitude, you've already bested over half of your courtesy clerk brethren. At Kroger the raises are not even noticeable unless you work full time. You can advance to a checker before you're 18. You might even get to work in produce or dairy before you're 18. Just stay out of the local gossip, leave drama at home, and remember to keep your pride and your phone in your car before entering. If the bathrooms need cleaning, you are expected to do it as the lowest member of the totem pole. There is nothing wrong with taking out trash either. You won't contract ebola as long as you wear gloves and use common sense. This job is also not a field for you to find a chick to bang. Put your dick on stand-by because nothing will make you dread work more than having an ex that works with you.

At 16, there's really no room for advancement.

At least one Southwest store has 16 and 17-year-olds in produce, grocery, and dairy.  The immediate "advancement" is a dime, but it's a move onto the wage scale (instead of fixed/topped-out courtesy clerk) as well as perhaps 300% more hours.

If nothing else, you'll get an early, up-close view of the wonderful thing that is Corporate America.

Make sure you are always working and trying to get things done in a timely manner. Trash and carts where always my favorite things to do as a bagger. It may take some time to get promoted. It took me around 8 months to get to produce and I'm only 17. Just dont be the guy who shows up for his first day and then is never seen again. Give it a couple of weeks and it may start to like it.
