When I was hired on, I was told that since I didn't have any experience working a register I could couldn't start out as a cashier, running my own booth at festivals and ren fairs didn't count. I have since found out that that was a lie and the dude that hired me just needed to fill empty bagger spots and didn't think I would last (I'm an overweight white girl who also grew-up on a farm moving around 50 pound bags of feed and wrangling horses, goats, and sheep none of which fits on a resume so he just went by the overweight white girl).

The reason for this post. I'm a 25 year old grad student and I have been working at my store for about a year and a half at this point. I've been trying to change departments since right before starting my grad school (Back last August) and grad job (I work 2 jobs and go to school). But because I'm a girl and girls don't last long at our massive store as courtesy clerks, I feel like they're keeping in on the front end. Mind you I don't want to relocate because I want to get away from all of the heavy lifting we do on the front end with water, dog food, furniture, and such, but I would like to go somewhere that I can make a bit more than $7.25 an hour. (Being away from some of the lazy idiots who won't clear lot is a plus. I get tired of pushing in massive loads because we run out of buggies).

Would joining the union help with this at all? Or would it be a waste of an hour's paycheck each week?

When I graduated undergrad with my English degree, I knew I wanted to go back to get a grad degree in student affairs and didn't want to get a long-term job. Initially, I was hoping to quit Kroger and just work at my grad job, but the Kroger paycheck helps to pay for gas and limited groceries for myself, my sister, and her two kids. The grad paycheck pays the house, utilities, and various other bills. I've considered trying to find another job, but grocery/retail is flexible with my schedule that I can still work on campus, and go to school.

I've had some offers of better paying work else where, but the hours are all during the 9-5 time frame when I need to be at my grad job, or in class. So until I figure out how to clone myself, I'm stuck at Kroger or a similar type 24hour operation.

Try Walmart. Start at $8.50 here to run a register or $9.25 to unload the trucks.

"He" just went with the overweight white girl.  What did he say?  He used those words?  I'd sue him.  Did he actually say this to you or about you to someone?  That's so wrong and against company policy.  Did he say it?  Or is just how you "see" it?  This is important.  You drop a charge like that against someone you need to be able to back it up.  So, what EXACTLY did he say about your weight?  Your being a female?  Your being white?  This could potentially be a major lawsuit against Kroger.  But if you just "think" he said this or thought this and you are claiming it as truth, then you could be sued for libel and slander.  They are two different things if you need to look them up before you reply, please do so.
