Getting Fired?

A courtesy clerk that has worked with me for over a year was finally caught slacking off and hiding in the bathroom. I heard she was taken to the store manager's office for a meeting. Does this mean she's fired?

She does nothing at work but flirt and maybe bags for about 20 minutes before going off and hiding so I wouldn't mind if she leaves. But part of the reason they haven't been able to fire so far is that she has family that's higher up to my store.

The rest of us are getting tired of her not doing her job and we have to pick up the slack.

No, she won't be fired. If they caught her this time, that means she has to be caught 3 more times doing the same thing within 6 months to get fired. This will probably just be an SIR(significant incident report) then an actual write-up, then suspension, then firing.

Drat, I was hopeful there for a minute.

You'll find that it's nearly impossible to get somebody fired once they are past their probationary period.   We have someone who sleeps 2-3 hours a night on the clock, evidenced for months and nothing happens.   The excuse?  "You know our hiring situation".   It's so hard to bring in new help, that keeping people around that are seemingly worthless is a better alternative to not having any help.   That coupled with having any incentive to be a productive member of the team being nill creates a nasty environment for employee retention.

Yep, there was someone in my store who I worked with who couldn't do the simplest of deli tasks (cleaning) and the paperwork to ensure health safety. She got suspended, but she didn't get fired. Basically, all ideas to get rid of her were thwarted since simply put, they need the bodies.

Kroger HR couldn't care less how many bodies a store is in need of. From experience I can tell you that beyond the personal relationships you form in your particular store, kroger couldn't give a damn about you. If they have their asses covered they will fire you. If not they wont. Most often they will try to strong arm you into resigning. Kroger "family" is a term they use very loosely in order to make their company employee relationship look good to newcomers and customers alike. Its a corporation like any other that has its main focus in greed. Not "customer 1st" or employee satisfaction. In reality however, if your employees are happy that will boil over to the customers as well.

I've seen people let go for this and then grieve it successfully. Other than theft I don't know if there's much the union won't touch.

I've been personally offended seeing whose jobs have been saved sometimes. Mercifully such people usually end up at another store.

You all have these purportedly horrible coworkers; I have mostly tremendous coworkers who are hounded (and sometimes driven off) by a horrible store manager.
