It doesn't happen often, but occasionally someone gives me a tip for helping them out to their car. I've heard that we're not supposed to take tips from customers. Usually when I try to refuse a tip though the customers will throw it into the cart and walk away. What should I do?
Take the tip and DON'T TELL ANYONE. Not even your best friend. If anyone happens to say anything, just say that the customer insisted that you get one and would not take no for an answer.
I'm pretty sure it's an unwritten rule, but you're to refuse a tip, but if they insist you can take it as long as it isn't a large amount of money. People are tipped here all the time, but management is fine with it.
If someone wants to hand me a $20.00 tip, I take it and I'm very gracious about it. It happened more than once when I was a courtesy clerk. Customers give cashiers/courtesy clerks tips right in front of floor supervisors and it's not an issue. As far as I know, and this might vary from area to to area, but it's never been against the rules to accept a tip here. As long as you're not soliciting one, if a customer offers you one, it's a-okay to take.
Our employee handbook states employees are not allowed to SOLICIT tips. No problem. Our union contract states employees are allowed to RECIEVE tips. One of our jerk store managers tried to fire a cashier for a tip a regular customer gave her. Read your handbook and union contract. I get tips, I just don't say anything.
When I was a cc, I ALWAYS took tips given to me. I figured, I didn't make that much money and the company would end up keeping it themselves if I turned it in, so I might was well keep it.
You are best off saying something like "you didn't have to, but thank you!" I receive tips every now and then... it's nice! Don't tell anyone, though! :)

I always thanked them and I would look out for them when they came shopping again! Some guy had 3 carts of food and I bagged it and he gave me $10 and told me to go buy a 6 pack with it. I told him I would, but Im only 16.

Yours does but his might say something different, like mine does.
True. That's why I said "OUR" contract and said to read your contract and handbook. I thought I made it clear - I guess because of the typo it didn't come across as truth LOL!
I take the tips and tell the customer "Aww thanks, you didn't have too." But then I also keep the coins I find on the floor and in the parking lot.
One of my managers says that's stealing the customer's money though. If it's a few cents, I doubt the customer is going go know that they lost the money.
Right? If you turn it in to lost and found it goes right into store profits. You'll NEVER see it come back your way EVEN if management "puts your name" on it and says check back in a week. The "customer returns" to "claim" their money. Lies.
That's why I kept all loose change and cash found. Still do.

I actually had a guy at my old store get fired for that.
He found a dollar in the parking lot or something, and kept it. Apparently someone saw him, and reported him. Loss Prevention or management or whoever called him in the next day, made him return the dollar, then fired him. They claimed that anything found on the ground is Kroger property, therefore he was stealing from Kroger.
Kinda sucked for him. The department manager, backup manager, myself, hell, the whole department, thought it was ridiculous. But Kroger takes theft seriously.

Well all the Kroger stores in my area are in strip shopping centers. So, let's say a lady visits the $ Store right next door to Kroger, drops a dollar by her car. That $ when found belongs to Kroger. Typical.
