So someone called in in my department and they called me about coming in and I never answered. Can I get written up for not calling back? I really didn't feel like coming in today after I worked the past 8 days straight.

I'm assuming that you were never scheduled for the time that they called you? Then don't worry about it.

If they mention it, just say you were gone all day.  Thank goodness for caller ID. I never answer the phone if I don't recognize the number.  Sometimes they'll try to call you from their cell phones rather than an actual store phone so the name, "Kroger" doesn't show up on your caller ID.

If you're off, then technically you don't have to answer. They'll make do and be fine. However sometimes it's advisable to "come in anyways" as a favor, especially if you are trying to get a day off that you really want. This is only advisable for cool managers who do you favors (day off wise) when asked.

However if the manager is a douche to you and NEVER grants favors, EVEN when you bend over backwards, then by all means, ignore the call.

If you were scheduled to be off then you're fine. You're not obligated to work if you're not scheduled.

Honestly, it's not against policy to not return a call, but it is good practice. Usually when they need a shift filled, they'll call you. If you don't call back, they don't know you're not available for it. It's courteous to at least return the call, even if you have to make up an excuse, and let them know you can't come in. At the very least, it tells them not to expect you in that day and they can work on trying to get other people to come in.

So while you don't have to call them back, I would make it a point to at least return the call if you can.
