Second day and third day as courtesy clerk, what to expect?

I have my second shift today from 5pm-11pm , im afraid that there wont be much to do, and i've only done bagging and carts.

What do i do for go backs? And what if they ask me to take out the trash?

Aswell, last time i was doing carts for like 2 and a half hours, is this normal? I didn't know if i should go in or not after an hour, so is there someone i should talk to after an hour?

Also, third shift is on saturday from noon to 8:30pm, I feel like this will be hell, as everyone goes to kroger on saturday? What should i expect?

Thanks a lot, still nervous because i didnt learn to much on my first day. :/

Do the keep the carts inside at your store?  If so, each time you bring carts inside, look at the checkout lanes and see if they are getting backed up and if there are courtesy clerks bagging.  If it's busy you can ask a supervisor if they need your help inside.

Relax.  You don't need to know everything the first week.  It is good to be eager and excited tho.

As for signing in, I would sign in when you start your shift.  Ask the FES if they want you to write down your breaks/lunch.  They will probably be the person doing the payroll corrections.  I write down my hours at home just in case the corrections get "lost".

Someone needs to show you where the trash chute is.  Don't let it lock if it is being held open with cardboard.  Cardboard goes in a baler.  Garbage in the trash chute.

Ask the FES if they have a lay-out map of the store.  Looks like a menu sort of.  Sometimes they are hanging at the end of the aisles.  Or, at the entry near the small black carry baskets.  Practice makes you better at go backs.  Perishable(anything refrigerated or frozen) items must go back asap.  If it has been at room temp too long, have someone show you where to put it.

Most stores are set up similar.  Canned veggies, fruit, beans, tuna, soup and bagged rice are in one aisle.  Condiments, spaghetti and sauce, ethnic foods and tortillas in another.  Bake aisle, Cereal and school lunch aisle.  Pop aisle, water aisle, large juice aisle.  Cookies and crackers aisle, Soap aisle, Petfood aisle, Paper towel, napkins, Kleenex, plastic spoons, paper plates, plastic baggies, toothpicks and toilet paper aisle.  Find where the toothpicks are and you will make a lot of customers happy.  They are usually close to the Home Sense napkins

Generally, a Courtesy Clerk spends about 30 minutes to an hour at a time doing lot duty(carts).  Your store might be different.  There should be a check list near the service desk that shows when you have lot duty during your shift.  Keep hydrated in the heat.  Ask FES how long you are supposed to be on lot duty when they send you out into the harsh elements.

If you are asked to do something that you have not been trained to do, make sure whoever is asking is aware you have not yet been trained.  Some FES can't keep track of who has been trained to do what. Basically, training is following a seasoned CC and they show you how something is supposed to be done.  That is a good time to ask questions.

Good luck and enjoy job.

Ask your managerhow long to stay outside. Our shifts are usually one hour. Customers are not careful and some do not care. Be careful in the lot. We have had several CCs get hit (tapped).

Trash rash bags are kept on the supply rack and at the service desk. Get a cart (or  a wheeled trash bin if you have one) And collect the garbage. The bags are cheap and they rip. You will get trash on yourself and it will lead. Double bags, line the bottom of the cart with a clean bag, etc. to keep the process clean if need be. You can dump the small register trashes into a big bag to save on bags if you want. Trash to the compactor. Cardboard to the baler. If you are a minor be very careful to follow all safety rules around these machines, esp. During your probation period (minors technically can't even put trash in the compactor here). Don't forget to push the button to compact the trash.

there are designated areas for damaged go backs. Somebody should give you a tour. If if you cannot find where a product goes, ask or give it to somebody else. Managers do not like when things are purposely misplaced AT ALL,

Cleaning supplies for restrooms are kept on the supply rack or in one of the restrooms (Gloves, cleaners, toilet brush, toilet paper, etc.). Always sign off on the sheets. The paper towel and toilet paper holders can be opened by a key (probably found at the service desk).

Paper and plastic bags are in the back room. Grab a cart or u-boat and bring some to the front. Load up the registers. Cardboard goes to the baler. Always clean up the packaging mess this process leaves. Be careful lifting the packages of paper.

There is cleaner and paper towel at the registers. Run the belts and wipe them down. Dust and wipe the whole register. Recycle stray plastic bags, if possible.

At our store you are scheduled as "sanitation" if you are to be cleaning that day.  They usually schedule the clerks who have been there awhile for sanitation.  Our clerks never do both, carts, bag and sanitation.  You can look on the store schedule under the courtesy clerks hours and see if anyone is scheduled "sanitation".  We had one clerk who loved it, always volunteered.

If it's ever dead slow and you don't have anything to do, start pulling the dirt trays/traps and cleaning them. They usually get rather gross because no one remembers to empty them out, and you'll get some bonus points with your supervisor if she/he sees you doing it without being asked.
