quit without notice bad?

I worked in my store for three years, I really like the people (for who they are), etc. However, the working conditions, the workload (our DM always over-ordered because he never checked backstock and if there isn't a full case of a product on the shelf, he will order it anyway), the management team, morale, as well as staffing concerns (they were 60+ people short when I left and now it's climbing into the high 70's and the students haven't even left yet), as well as the pay (8.05) were awful for someone putting in three years of service. I've seen our MGMT team screwing people out of classified bid positions and giving them to part timers with less than one year instead of the full timers in our store trying to get them. I've seen our store manager downright insult our only utility clerk infront of customers on the clock. I was part time and was frequently working 10-12 hour shifts and 40-48 hour weeks because of the sheer amount of work that was required and had to sweat and run around my dept looking like a crazy person just so I could finish on time.

I'm a sophomore in college and have school starting again soon (can't do leave because I go to school in the area) and I pretty much had two options because I knew that I would be forced to work those hours because were so short: stick around in another department for low pay, or walk out and find another job. I set my priorities straight and turned a short sweet immediate resignation letter in. Applied for jobs the second I turned my letter in and Wal-Mart called the very next morning and said they'd give me experience pay and start me at 11.50 an hour. All I had to do is show up and complete the hiring process.

Fast forward two weeks after I quit, I went in to do some shopping today and had to stop into Dairy for yogurt, and one of my former FT coworkers was blood red screaming in my face in the store saying he can't live his life now because of me, saying I shouldn't be able to shop here anymore because of what I did and anytime I ask for help he and his coworkers will refuse to serve me, and if he was off company property when he ran into me he would "do things to me" and then he ran to the timeclock and ran for the door to go home. I tried to be completely civil about leaving but I simply couldn't deal with the stress and long hours every single night.

Would you have given notice in a situation like this?

screw your ex coworkers, all of them!  who gives a F*** how bad you screwed them over!  you're better off.  You should call the 1-800 number and have that guy fired for harrassing a customer (you).  I'm proud that you left, congrats and best of luck on moving up in the world!

If it's 2 weeks later, then even if you had put in a 2 week notice you'd be out of there. Not your fault they can't hire anyone in a timely manner, and can't hire anyone competent enough to help the guy. Next time you see him, tell him to f**k off.

They did the same thing to me when I quit.  I called corporate and they put an immediate stop to it. I eventually quit shopping at Kroger.

With as many shopping options as there are available, who needs Kroger. I recently gave my two week notice and I likely will never step foot in this store again.  I am perfectly happy shopping at Wal-mart or any of the other, smaller, yet friendlier stores in my area.  Even if they are slightly more expensive.

uh yeah, I would have told him "hey you're about to have all the free time in the world because i'm about to get you fired for being extremely rude and threatening" then I would have either asked for a manager and/or tried to get in touch with someone at corporate "is this really the culture at Kroger now? You're just hiring these people off the streets that don't care at all about threatening the customers?

It all depends on what you buy too.  Walmart is higher on some things, Albertsons has better meat, etc.  I just think for better service and overall shopping experience, it's worth a few dollars more to shop elsewhere.

Actually, that's a lot more difficult for others than people who live in bigger cities. I personally live in a smaller town and the only other option besides Kroger is IGA. We have an Aldi's too, but it's way to far to walk to and I don't have a car. Usually I shop at IGA for my main necessities and then go to Kroger for anything extra that I can get off with my discount. Plus the rolls of ground beef at Kroger's are nasty. But that's my personal opinion. But, just stating that for others it's hard to be able to go to other stores if there isn't a way there. I would prefer to shop and work at Walmart. Why? Because the sh*t I've seen at Kroger is enough to scar anyone.

I shop at Kroger only because it's the closest option.
