A couple of the most predominate questions are:

When a customer comes up with a name brand item and says we were out of the store brand how do I ring up that item with the correct price?

How to do WICs?

General tips/tricks?

I know this should have been covered by a trainer, but all my store did was throw me on a register with nothing but computer training so.....

I am assuming you are a cashier.  I was trained on a cash register for 2 hours about 7 years ago.  Haven't used one since so I am not knowledgeable.

There are several posters that will give you a general idea on how to do those transactions.

You will learn what to do by asking coworkers questions and repetition.

As for the out of stock store brand.  You are asking about the "Make it Right" policy.  Ask for a quick training session for this policy from your CSM.  Each employee is supposed to have 3 Make it Right stickers.  The product they are buying is supposed to have one of those stickers unless your store is out of them.  Let's say the store brand product is $0.59 and the name brand product is $1.39.  I would write 80 cents off on the sticker x how many they wanted.   Or, you could write however many @ 59 cents.   I usually ask how many they want before I let them know how much I can mark it down so I can write it on the sticker.  I am not sure how the cashiers process it after that.  I am guessing an 80 cent Make it Right discount.  :/  We are supposed to also put our initials and department on the sticker.  I will not do this for family or friends.

Basically, if we are out of a store brand, I will give the name brand equivalent at the store brand price.  If we are out of a name brand, we are encouraged to give away a store brand product for free.  I am not easy to get free stuff from but I will negotiate reasonably to make the customer happy.  You should discuss this with your CSM or store manager before implementing the policy on your own.  Many old timers refuse to use the policy because they think it is a trap to fire people.  I use a lot of caution but rarely need to Make it Right.

Best tip:  Never ring yourself up on a main cash register(Uscan is ok if you are off the clock).  Never ring family or friends up.  Never buy anything for yourself while clocked in.  Don't even pick it up on your way back from the bathroom on your way to the time clock to clock out for break.

When a customer comes up with a name brand item and says we were out of the store brand how do I ring up that item with the correct price?
Type in the new price, hit 'price override', scan item, type in 8 for reason code.

How to do WICs?
WICs are complicated and I'm not sure if everyone does them the same way. At my store, however, they're done like this:
1. Make sure all the items are WIC approved. Ask for customer's state ID or WIC folder, make sure the name aligns, ask them to sign the check(s).
2. Hit the WIC button twice, type in the dates, scan the items in the order as listed on the check.
3. Type 6 slash check, put in the WIC check upside down such that the MICR numbers are on the right.
4. Hit clear and give them the receipt.

General tips/tricks?
There are none, cashiering is basically just muscle memory and you'll get the hang of it with time. Don't worry about screwing up. Everyone ****s up everything their first few days cashiering and then it gets easier.

wic's are weird. we don't know if your state still uses the checks or the card. the card is much easier and acts like a specialized ebt card. the checks are something i've forgotten how to do but i do recall 6/<amount> for fruits?

make it right has to be checked back with the person who tol the customer it could be done but, once approved, you hit <price on sticker>, price override, scan the item, then 8 - Make it right.
