I was supposed to be a grocery manager but due to a couple of co-managers telling the store mgr i wasn't right for it, the store mgr decided to give me a two week period to prove i can. I feel like i am ready for it and have been a back up for a year, but, I am open to whatever knowledge or wisdom any grocery mgr's on this forum can impart to help me do my job better especially with the holidays coming
Do you know why they would think you're not ready to be a grocery manager? Also, the fact that they're giving you just a two week trial period just before the Thanksgiving holiday seems rather suspicious. It's almost as if they're setting you up to fail so they can bring in the person they want. Two weeks is not enough time to prove yourself. Three months months is more like it.
Don't run out of holiday items. You have Christmas to clean up on it, so there is no reason to hold back. Prioritize holiday items getting replenished, order well, and keep the back room organized. Keep all the shippers filled to the shelf and killed if they are low enough.

It's due to the fact that the ADH is a beast and is everyone's favorite imo. He's good, but, the only thing holding him back right now is that he was just certfied from another dept and needs time to develop in grocery which he would say so himself.

I know how you feel, i'm running my department right now too as relief for a few weeks and we're living out of a trailer due to some remodeling. If i don't order we run out of items and have nothing to fill our tables with, if i do order then i'll get chewed out for ordering too much because it's filling up the trailer. i feel like i'm being set up to fail right now too, it was mostly just bad timing but i feel like no matter what it's going to look poorly with management.

Well that's a unique situation. There, I would order in waves, as to not keep too much on hand at any one time. Normally, you just want to bring it in early so you have all you need for when the warehouse starts scratching, but in your situation doing smaller waves seems like it'd be a better fit. What I mean is, if you sell 1500 cans of green beans the week of thanksgiving, bring in 10-20 cases each order, instead of an entire pallet. Now, the last order that goes off before major selling(Next Monday) try to bring in whatever is remaining on your top 200. If the warehouse is scratching, that's their fault. Argue that you couldn't bring it in early because of space. But most importantly, be in contact with your store manager/co manager over grocery so that they know your gameplan and you can alter if they want you to.

It's not for grocery in my scenario but the advice still applies as far as the holiday items go so thanks :) Bakery is a little different since a lot of our product is frozen. We can only order what we can use right now because there's only so much room in the trailer.

I wish they would bring a frozen trailer for the holiday items to our store. The turkeys, and holiday items for bakery and deli are ridiculous and no one in those departments want to organize their stuff

Same here, they sent out 5 pallets of turkeys a week early because "They are expecting to have to send out extra trucks during that period, so they don't think they'll be able to field the time/drivers/trucks to send them out when they are due to go out". Our freezer has been completely full virtually every day. When a truck comes in, it almost all goes in produce/meat.
Not to mention the vast majority of sales happen the 3 days before thanksgiving and you're told to bring all of your items in 2 weeks early, so they literally don't move for almost 2 weeks. There is absolutely no space.
