I was hired on November 20 as a cashier. I was so excited and I loved my job and the people I worked with. They were always calling me to come in because someone would call off and I always went in when asked. Well Saturday night I called to get my hours for the week and this manager gave me my hours and even asked if I could work Sunday night even though I was scheduled off and I said yes. So Sunday comes and I go in to work and I go to punch in and it says employee not found. So I get a manager and she tries and it still don't work. So I see the manager who asked me to work and gave me my hours for the week before and she said says hold on I'll be back. 10 minutes later she comes back and asks me to go upstairs to the office with her. So I go not thinking anything of it. We get into the office and she closes the door and says I really hate to have this conversation with u but I got told that an email from Indianapolis came in at 11pm last night saying we were to let you go ASAP because you failed a screening . She goes on to explain that when kroger allows people to get hired before the drug and background checks come back. So I told her how I don't do drugs and all that is on my record is a domestic battery charge from when I was married and my husband at the time we both were fighting. This was almost 14 years ago! She showed me the email to show me she has no clue what they reason was cuz all it said was to let me go ASAP due to failing the prehiring screenings. I was so humiliated and started crying . Why would they fire me 4 weeks after I been there? She told me I can contact the union rep to get more info or see what they can do but she says this decision came from Indianapolis not them(the store I worked at)
also I am upset that they let me come into work dressed in uniform if they were just going to fire me. So I take it if u have a domestic battery charge from almost 14 years ago you can't work at Kroger? I am 35 now and this happened when I was like 21.
That's terrible! I'm so sorry this happened to you right before Christmas, of all times........it does sound like your manager was at least trying to be decent and maybe even help you out. I think you absolutely should at least try contacting the union rep, you never know, there might be a shot there. Kroger should never have hired you before the results came back.
We have a Co-manager who has a domestic charge on his record but he plea bargained it down to a disorderly conduct now he's a store manager. In my opinion Kroger should have taken a page from the NFL and fired his sorry ass but this is Kroger where isn't not what you know its who you know.

the thing is every job is about who you know now days

Best to you ~~
Kroger could care less. While I don't quite see this as intentional and a "Scrooge" move, I also have no doubts that even if they knew it as one, the company wouldn't care. The union might help you...but the union's reputation of assistance is more negative than positive when it comes to the assistance of employees.
With my union they would have to pay you four hours for showing up! That's strange they went back 14 years on a background check. I had stuff in my past from 15 or so years ago but I got hired. I'm sorry you were let go but I'm also happy. Kroger is such a bad place to work and you will be so much happier somewhere else. Chances are you weren't going to get any hours anyway. So good luck to you and don't even mention you worked for Kroger when you apply for a new job.
Thank you all so much for replying. I've already been putting in applications online at other places so hopefully I can find something. Just sucks cuz I'm a single mother and they do this to me for something that happened 14 years ago.

The manage called you in to work and you showed up to work. They should pay you 4 hours pay for showing up! The manager lied to you to get you to come in. I would call corporate and demand that they pay you. Tell them you will hire an attorney. I bet you anything there are other employees with stuff on their records that work there. I could understand if it was a theft charge since you were working with money but heh, a push and shove 14 years ago shouldn't matter.
