Hello, i have been working at kroger for a couple of years now and i'm just wondering what it takes to move into store management. Some of the foundation skills etc.
If you have a 4 year degree, you can apply just like a normal position. If you do not, some divisions allow you to use store experience as your degree and/or some require department head experience. The easiest way to find out for sure is to ask your store manager. Good references obviously go a long way. With only 2 years in the company, it may be in your best interest to look into going into department head training first unless you have a 4 year degree. A lot of the time if the person is wanting to go that route, they'll have them MIC(manager in charge) for a while to give them some experience in handling customer & store issues. But yeah, just talk to your store manager for more specific information tailored to your situation.
I have to say, I notice an awful lot of overweight white ladies who sleep with black men get the position. I know of several store managers who sucked a few dicks to get to where they were too. But in the end, like most things at Kroger, its all about making the right friends.
I've heard you need either one of the following to enter the MD1 program, along with recommendation:
A. A college degree (preferably bachelors or higher).
B. At least two years experience as a department manager.
And that's just to become a co-manager. There's roughly 3 or 4 of those for every STORE manager. So you'll have to spend no less than about 5-7 years as a co-manager before a store manager position becomes available. So we could be talking a solid decade before you become a store manager, and even that's not a sure thing. Please go to school and learn a trade or a profession.
